On Thursday 3 September, our Year 12 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attended the Catholic Education Office Diocese of Wollongong Bishop’s Mass at St Francis Xavier Cathedral in Wollongong. Mr Eirth, Mr Lopez, Mrs Ramognini, Mrs Manley, Aunty Chris, Aunty Jo and Aunty Katelyn celebrated with 18 St John's students as they proudly accepted their graduation certificates from Bishop Brian and Acting Executive Director Mr Tim Gilmour - a truly amazing achievement for themselves, their family, community and their school!

The girls Super 8s Gala Day Championship competition has been running for a few years now. Yesterday’s result of our girls topping their group and making it into the final on the day, was the best performance by any of our previous SJE girls’ teams.
The girls won their initial game against Corpus Christi with St John’s batting first and amassing a healthy 50 runs after our seven overs. Top scorers were our openers Darcy Sullivan(10) and Eily McNamara(10 not out). Corpus in reply could only reach 20 runs due to some great bowling and fielding. Mackenzie Gleeson, Olivia Seymour-Munn and Emerson Boatswain each picked up a wicket.
In our second game against St Mary’s, our bowlers were ruthless bowling the St Mary’s team out for only 11 runs. Most of the bowlers picked up a wicket however, Olivia Seymour-Munn picked up two wickets.
In our third qualifying game our girls batted first but could only muster 3/28 against some really tight bowling and sharp fielding from Magdalene College after the seven overs. Magdalene reached the target without any loss of wickets.
After two wins, one loss, one bye and a superior run rate, the St John’s girls qualified for the final against Holy Spirit. Winning the toss, St John’s put the Holy Spirit team in to bat. Holy Spirit got off to a solid start and eventually scored 1/51 after their allotted overs with Emerson picking up the only wicket. In reply our girls put up a spirited performance with the bat to get to 2/46 falling only 5 runs short. Emerson got our highest score of the day with 18 not out, with Darcy reaching 11 not out.
Although the final result didn’t go our way, congratulations must go to the whole team for the enthusiasm and great spirit they showed on the day in each and every game they played. For some our team it was the first time that they had played in a competitive cricket game. Well done girls and best of luck for next year.

The Secondary Boys Cricket Championships delivered an action-packed day of cricket, showcasing exceptional individual talent, tight finishes, and immense team spirit across our four matches. All students who represented the St John's are to be commended in their behaviour, attitude and sportsmanship on the day.

We burst out of the gates in our opening match, posting a formidable total of 89 runs. The foundation was laid by a stellar batting display, highlighted by brilliant unbeaten knocks from Yuin Hill 27*, Oliver Lane 26*, and Finn McNamara 15*. Defending the total, our fielding was razor-sharp. The standout moment of the second innings came when wicketkeeper Jackson Laycock took a fantastic catch behind the stumps to remove their most dangerous batsman, ensuring a strong start to our campaign.

Our second fixture proved to be a tougher challenge. Despite a valiant batting performance from Joseph Berriman, who anchored our innings to finish 24 not out, our final team total wasn't quite enough to apply scoreboard pressure. The opposition batted well and chased the target down comfortably.

We were sent into the field first against a strong Holy Spirit side that managed to set an imposing total. However, the bowling innings was lit up by Yuin Hill, who dramatically snared two crucial wickets in as many balls. In the run chase, Jackson Laycock stepped out from behind the stumps to show off his phenomenal batting prowess, brutally dispatching the Holy Spirit bowlers to all parts of the ground on his way to an explosive 24*.

The final match was an absolute nail-biter. Our bowling unit produced its most dominant performance of the day, suffocating the opposition with highly economical spells led brilliantly by Dylan Henry and backed by fantastic catching across the outfield. In the chase, Joseph Berriman starred with the bat once again, retiring on a brilliant 24*. The match came down to the absolute wire, but we fell agonisingly short, missing out on victory by just 4 runs on the final ball of the day.

Coaches Player Award For his exceptional all-round contributions with both bat, ball and leadership the Coaches Player was awarded to Yuin Hill.

I look forward to this team's future endeavors this year in their Berg Shield campaign in term 4.

Year 10 Aboriginal Studies students visited Nowra Local Court to learn about the court process, and the importance of circle sentencing for Aboriginal peoples going through the court system. We got to sit inside a courtroom used for District Court hearings, and learned from the Sheriff and Registrar about the court process and career opportunities within the court system. We also met Uncle Barney McKinnon, a Birpai man and local Elder who has worked with many people in circle sentencing. He spoke incredibly highly of the powerful impact circle sentencing can have for Aboriginal peoples as a diversionary option within the justice system. St John's expresses our gratitude to the Nowra Local Court and staff for welcoming us there to learn.

A huge thank you to our entire school community for your incredible generosity during our recent fundraising efforts!

Together, we raised a fantastic $1,400 for Legacy Shoalhaven.

These funds will go directly toward supporting the families of veterans in our local region—providing essential social, financial, and emotional support to those who have sacrificed so much for our country.

Well done to the students who gave up their break times to sell merchandise and collect donations!

On September 1st and 2nd, our 9/10 Girls Oztag team headed to Tuggerah to compete in the NSW Champion of Champions competition. Their resilience was tested early after losing Lulu to an injury before the tournament even began, though a huge thank you to her for her spirited support on the sideline throughout the tournament! The girls came out firing on day one, dominating their first two games 3–0 and 4–0 before dropping two tight matches by just two tries. Day two saw them hit the ground running again with two big wins to secure a spot in the quarter-finals. Despite losing two more players, the team dug deep in the quarters, fighting hard in a tough 3–1 loss. Finishing 7th in the state is a massive achievement, and we couldn't be prouder! A special shoutout goes to our scoring machine and Captain, Allira Hepburn, for leading from the front and putting on an absolute masterclass. Huge congratulations to the rest of the team- Sienna, Hannah, Lily G, Annie, Lily F, Nevaeh, Olivia, Lola, Jaide, and Ivy, for their outstanding performance, effort and teamwork on the state stage. Finally, a heartfelt thank you to all the parents for their incredible commitment and support over the two days.

Two of our outstanding students, Remm McKenzie and Kyuss Watson, were officially recognised today by Acting Mayor Peter Wilkins for their remarkable courage and composure during a critical, life-threatening emergency.

In the very first hour of their work experience at the Bay and Basin Leisure Centre, the pair were required to spring into immediate action. Remaining calm under pressure, they followed emergency instructions to the letter and promptly guided first responders to the patient. Their quick thinking, clear communication, and seamless teamwork helped save a life.

Acting Mayor Wilkins commended the young men for their maturity and service, celebrating them as exemplary role models for our school and the wider community. We couldn't be prouder of Remm and Kyuss. They have truly demonstrated what it means to lead by example. Congratulations!

Last week Year 12 spent their Reflection Day reflecting on their growth and their motto, “Aspire not to have more, but to be more.” Starting with an outdoor Liturgy, the day invited students to consider how this vision has formed them in thought, action, and faith. In a spirit of gratitude for their time at St John’s, students offered ritual prayers, wrote heartfelt letters of appreciation, and put their faith into action through various school gardening projects.
