Happy Easter from us at the School of Practical Philosophy Adelaide 🌿
There's something about this time of year that just invites you to slow down, isn't there? The Adelaide autumn is doing its thing, cooler mornings, golden afternoons, it's the perfect backdrop for a bit of quiet reflection.
Easter has always been a season of pausing and looking inward. And that's kind of what we're all about here. Not philosophy as some lofty, abstract thing, but the kind that actually helps you live better, think clearer, and find a little more peace in the everyday.
So wherever you are this long weekend, whether you're with family, taking a walk, or just enjoying the quiet, we hope you get a moment that you can just breathe and be!
Happy Easter 🐣 Wishing you rest, reflection, and maybe a little chocolate too.

✨ Happy International Women's Day ✨
In 1693, an Italian nun named Isabella Leonarda published something no woman had ever published before :a collection of sonatas.
The final piece, Sonata No. 12 (Op. 16), was her only solo work: a single violin in seven movements, lyrical and deeply expressive, written not for fame, but for devotion.
She composed only during her allotted rest hours, so as not to neglect her duties. And yet over 200 works exist bearing her name.
Philosophy asks: what might become possible when we act from stillness?

🌿Welcome to a new term of Practical Philosophy. 🌿
It’s lovely to begin this next chapter together. Each term offers a chance to pause, reflect, and explore how philosophy can support us in living more clearly, honestly, and wholeheartedly in everyday life.
Across all traditions of wisdom, true transformation is never confined to the individual alone. It unfolds in relation to others, and ultimately in service to a greater whole.
We look forward to the conversations, shared enquiry, and quiet discoveries that arise when we meet one another with openness and curiosity.
Whether you’re continuing the journey or joining us for the first time, you are very welcome. Thank you for being here, we’re glad to have you with us.

“Some are slaves of ambition or money, but others are interested in understanding life itself. These give themselves the name of philosophers, and they value the contemplation and discovery of nature beyond all other pursuits.” - Pythagoras

✨ What if wisdom wasn’t abstract? ✨
Philosophy isn’t about having all the answers. It’s about learning how to live a happy life, how to think clearly, relate honestly, and meet life with steadiness and curiosity.
At the School of Practical Philosophy, we explore wisdom as something lived, not just studied.
Practical. Grounded. Shared.
If you’re curious, questioning, or quietly searching you’re already closer than you think.

Philosophy, in its truest sense, is a love of wisdom. It invites us to question the world around us —
and to question ourselves.
When things tip too far in one direction, philosophy offers another way of seeing, bringing us back to balance. Without that balance, what we stand for begins to erode.
The search for truth always leads inward.
Know thyself.

The School of Practical Philosophy had a long-standing connection with a Indian great sage, Śrī Śāntānanda Sarasvatī, until his death in 1997. He was a leading exponent of the philosophy of Advaita. The word Advaita means ‘not-two, without duality’. It speaks of unity, the underlying oneness in the world.
Śrī Śāntānanda Sarasvatī advanced the idea that to know oneself is to appreciate the constant being that is within us. During our Embodied Philosophy event on Sunday, 11th January we will discuss, pause and reflect on one of his statements about self-knowledge. He said:
"If you begin to be what you are, you will realise everything, but to begin to be what you are, you must come out of what you are not.
You are not those thoughts which are turning, turning in your mind; you are not those changing feelings; you are not the different decisions you make and the different wills you have; you are not that separate ego."
