We use these terms every day in hairdressing but how often do they actually get explained? đź’€

Occipital bone. Parietal bone. Temporal bone. Mastoid process. You’ve heard them. You’ve probably said them. But do you know exactly where they sit and why they matter?

Understanding the skull isn’t just anatomy, it’s the foundation of understanding the head you are cutting every single day. Where weight sits, where graduation builds, where the shape begins and ends...it all starts here.

Understanding face shape is essential for creating balance, suitability, and personalised haircuts.

For a round face shape, aim to create the illusion of length and avoid adding unnecessary width.

Use square or triangle shapes to complement the face.
Avoid wide fringes or excessive volume at the sides, as these exaggerate width rather than balance it.

Suitability is always the guiding principle.
When you understand how face shape influences design choices, every haircut creates balance that complements the face shape.

Curly Hair Styling Tip đź’ˇ

Have you ever used a tail comb to lift volume at the roots?

When I’m scrunch‑drying, I let the diffuser do the work. Minimal hands mean minimal disruption to the curl pattern.

Each curl behaves differently, so choose the tools and products that support your curl.

Do you use a tail comb for root volume or have another technique you swear by? Share it below.

How your body will assist you in fringe sectioning...
📍Place the comb on the highest point of the section.
📍Where the head rolls@away from under the comb, that's your break point.
📍Hair in front this break point naturally falls forward over the frontal bone... hence the fringe or bangs, depending where you are ;)
Now let's shift the focus to the cheekbones.
📍Position your body in front of the cheekbone and draw your section down in line with it.
📍Repeat on the opposite side.

Your body position contributes to half the work, use it.

I'd love to hear your thoughts, does this change how you will approach your next fringe sectioning?

Most cutting issues come back to one thing: direction.
Same elevation. Same sectioning. But change the direction… and you change the entire shape.
Round, square, triangle, it’s all controlled by where you direct each section.
Swipe through, study how direction influences shape, and start applying it behind the chair.
