I left teaching piano at a school because of this. I was tired of being viewed by teaching staff as a nuisance instead of respected for what I was contributing to the child's education.

Are you hooked on Wordle? I like words - here's a new one for your vocab. Audiation. It's about turning those dots on the page into a sound in your head.

If you learn to read music similar to touch typing it will be nearly impossible to achieve fluency. If you can think in sound, your reading of the notes will become more instinctive. You will be less afraid of mistakes because your ear will correct you swiftly.

I loved my piano lessons as a kid. l also loved singing and wanted to play these songs from my school song books on the piano. However they only included the melody and chord symbols and I wanted something in the LH. I asked my mum (a violinist) about the symbols - she thought C meant a C chord. But had no idea about G7! So I asked my piano teacher who said I'd learn about chords one day in the distant future. No help!

Not to be deterred, I invented alberti accompaniments in all root position (the only thing I knew from my classical sonatinas). I spent a lot of time singing through those pieces and playing by ear.

(Playing by ear was not far from a criminal offence in those days.)

Now the tables are turned. I'm determined to be the teacher who could have helped my 10 year old self. I'm that teacher who can help you learn chords from the beginning and encourage you to noodle around and play by ear.
