A meaningful, sensory and commercial experience. Leticia Pires designed a temporary pop-up for the Sydney Festival at Carriageworks, guiding visitors through a journey of light, scent, texture and sound.

"My concept, 'Discover your own gifts', explores the idea of recognising our own abilities instead of only seeing the value in others.

I translated this into a sensory journey through curiosity, introspection, discovery, clarity and retail. Each space has a different mood, using light, scent, texture and sound to guide the visitor through the experience.

I also connected the retail area to handmade candles, so visitors can take a piece of the journey with them.

Sustainability was considered through reusable and recyclable materials, such as steel framing, curved plywood, cork flooring, recycled fabrics and removable display plinths."

Inside the studio this week, our students built materials boards: selecting timber, stone, metal and textiles, and testing how each works together. It's the same process designers use to present concepts to clients.

The design of this bathroom started with a considered floor plan and sample board of materials and finishes. It was rendered and resolved in SketchUp (top image). Sarah then took it a step further, using AI to enhance the presentation of her design (bottom image) and bring the mood, materials and atmosphere to life.

At SDS, we encourage students to explore AI as a tool to sharpen their skills and elevate their work, not to replace their creativity. The ideas, the decisions and the design thinking are all Sarah's, AI simply helps her show them off.

Step inside a tunnel glowing with promise. "Brand New Shiny Perfect Swan Tunnel Love Candy Bar Sweet Blindbox Surprise" is a pop-up installation at Carriageworks that takes you on an amusement park ride of emotions.⁠

A comment on a world growing more diluted, disposable and artificial, the installation evolves over its stay for the Festival of Sydney, from stimulating wonderland to eerie, melancholic wasteland.⁠

Our students get the opportunity to design the interiors for a real client brief, and they learn that their job isn't to impose their own aesthetic, but to listen and interpret the brief.

Sarah Rubenstein says her "clients are deeply attached to the character and history of the property, particularly its Federation detailing, generous proportions and established garden setting. They appreciate layered, collected interiors that feel warm, welcoming and lived in rather than minimalist or overly refined. They are drawn to rich colour, texture and materials that age beautifully over time, including brass, leather, velvet and timber. The clients want the home to better support modern family living while celebrating the heritage character of the original house."

We think she nailed the brief!
