This week, North Perth Primary School proudly recognised National Reconciliation Week, joining communities across Australia in reflecting on our shared histories, cultures and achievements, and considering how we can all contribute to reconciliation.
Throughout the week, students listened and learned about the rich history, culture and contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples through daily facts shared over the PA. Indigenous music marked the beginning and end of each school day, creating opportunities for reflection and learning.
In classrooms, students explored the meaning of reconciliation through discussions, literature and videos. A range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander texts were shared with classes, helping students develop a deeper understanding of Dreaming stories, Country, culture and the enduring connection First Nations peoples have with the land. Students also completed ReconciliACTION cards, sharing the actions they can take to help build a more respectful, inclusive and connected future. These cards have become part of a growing display that invites our whole community to be involved.
At Friday's assembly, Room 6 students proudly led a thoughtful and meaningful presentation, including a class-written Acknowledgement of Country that demonstrated their understanding and respect for the Traditional Custodians of the land. They also shared information about Aboriginal author Gregg Dreise, former AFL champion, author and advocate Adam Goodes, and acclaimed performers Gina Williams and Jessica Mauboy, highlighting their significant contributions to Australia's rich Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, stories, arts and communities. Students shared the importance of National Reconciliation Week and this year's theme, All In, and encouraged families and community members to contribute their own commitments to reconciliation by adding a ReconciliACTION card to our growing display.
A special thank you to Room 6 for leading such an engaging assembly and to Mrs Hanlon for her leadership of our Reconciliation Action Plan group and coordination of the ReconciliACTION card wall. Their efforts have helped create meaningful opportunities for our students and community to learn, reflect and take action towards reconciliation.
This year's theme, All In, reminds us that reconciliation is everyone's responsibility and that meaningful change happens when we all commit to learning, listening and taking action every day. We thank our students, staff and community for embracing the spirit of reconciliation and helping to build a future founded on respect, understanding and connection.
