✨ Happy Birthday Lester Young! ✨

Lester Willis Young was born on 27 August 1909. He was an American composer and leading jazz tenor saxophonist of the 20th century.

Nicknamed ‘Prez’ by his good friend Billie Holiday, Lester Young was a rhythmic genius who reached jazz stardom in the 1940’s after playing with Count Basie and other leading musicians such as Benny Moten and Fletcher Henderson.

With the rare gift of being able to play a melody after hearing it once or twice, Lester Young could effortlessly perform his parts without learning to read music. Known for his smooth ‘singing’ sound and a preference to float lazily behind the beat, he was a master of melodic phrasing.

With a pioneering light, relaxed approach and carefully chosen notes, Lester Young replaced the heavy, aggressive style of his era with a signature slow vibrato that changed the sound of the tenor saxophone and revolutionised jazz in the process.

Fun fact: Not only an iconic figure in music, Lester Young made his mark in fashion too. A standard item in his slick and varied wardrobe was his wide, black, low crowned Pork Pie Hats, which he made himself by converting ordinary wide brimmed hats and is credited by many jazz musicians as originating.

✨ CLASS REVIEW! ✨

Oh MY! What a night!

Sandra and Fred joined us in Level 1 where we got kicky with it while conquering the Charleston rhythm Side by Side, adding a playful variation that kept the follows on their toes.

Then it was all JAZZ hands on deck in our Shim Sham Specialty Class where we Tacky Annie’d, Boogie Backed and Shorty George’d our way through the classic solo routine with prowess. Oof! The energy was so high it could have powered the building! The beaming grins in our Finishers Photo say it all. Thanks to everyone who joined in, we had an absolute BLAST 💥

Oz Big Band is bringing the tunes at the Mustang Bar on Friday night from 7pm!

✨ Happy Birthday Count Basie! ✨

William James "Count" Basie was born on 21 August 1904. He was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer and one of the most important bandleaders of the Swing Era.

With an understated yet captivating style of playing, Count Basie led his band from the piano, where he had a gift for setting tempos and making a rhythm section swing with lively ensemble work and generous soloing.

Known as the “Jump King" in his early days, Count Basie is credited with innovations like the use of two tenor saxophone players which created a distinctive sound and allowed for interesting interplay between the two musicians. His unique emphasis on the rhythm section, and his use of simple riffs in a big band became a hallmark of his style.

With an infectious rhythmic beat complimented by a long list of inspired and talented jazz soloists, The Count Basie Orchestra was considered the epitome of swing. The band was among the first to regularly feature vocalists, including the iconic Billie Holiday, which broadened their appeal and helped establish swing as a popular music style.

Count Basie was a towering figure in big-band jazz. His talent as a pianist and his remarkably consistent impeccable musical leadership - that spanned for nearly five decades - rightfully earned him a jazz royalty title and eternal recognition as one of the greatest bandleaders of all time.

Fun fact: Count Basie initially wanted to play the drums but was discouraged to pursue percussion after hearing drummer Sonny Greer play. Sonny Greer, who later rose to fame as the drummer for the Duke Ellington Orchestra, had a talent so superior that it led Count Basie to focus on piano, a decision that ultimately shaped his career!

✨ CLASS REVIEW! ✨

Ooooh YEAH, team Tuesday, you know where it’s at!

Level 1 welcomed Rob and Kate to the circle where we enjoyed a hearty serving of the 8 count rhythm before using it to Swing Out from Open in STYLE! While Level 2 played with a neat Side by Side Charleston variation before kick-step-tuck-turning-it into some super happy Hand to Hand Charleston - and it looked SO GOOD 🌟

The Matt Cahill Swing Combo will be keeping the joint jumpin’ at The Mustang Bar this Friday night from 7pm - 9.30pm

✨ CLASS REVIEW! ✨

Gee whizz, what a night! The Winter chill couldn’t cool you all off if it tried 🔥

Abi and James popped in to see what all the fun was about in Level 1 where we got comfy leading and following in closed before taking the Swing Out from Closed and a Lindy Circle for a spectacular spin 🌟

Then Level 2 got their hands (and feet!) greasy while working on the engine of the Swing Out from Open in order to make way for some SPICY redirections that filled the room with OOOOHHHH!

AJ Hix and His Rhythm Six will be swinging up a storm at The Mustang Bar this Friday night from 7pm - 9.30pm

It’s the perfect opportunity to take your sweet new moves to the floor!
