Following my post on Friday about the ‘A Great Day in Lindy’ global group portrait, It was brought to my attention by Trevor Hutchison - a renowned dancer, teacher and DJ (not to mention phenomenal Graphic Designer) - that the Perth swing dance community of the same year took their own photo! Here it is, taken at the Como Primary School Hall at ‘Club Splanky’, a popular social dance run by the Perth Swing Dance Society. Look closely and you’ll see Cheryl sitting on the floor, bottom left, with Trevor sitting next to her.

Fun Fact: The Perth swing dance scene was started in 1998 by Roger Schmidlin and Janet Tolifson with their School ‘Swing It Out’. Roger still teaches and dances regularly both here in Perth and around the globe.

Extra Fun Fact: Splanky is the very same event I met and first danced with Robbie, around late 2011-ish!

✨ On this day in 2004 ✨

The ‘A Great Day in Lindy’ photograph was taken!

On 9 October 2004, over 400 Lindy Hop dancers, instructors, and community members from around the world gathered on the steps of Columbia University's Earl Hall for a historic photo shoot. A project of Springboard Productions, LLC and yehoodi.com, spearheaded by dedicated swing dance historians including Terry Monaghan, ‘A Great Day in Lindy’ was inspired by Art Kane's iconic 1958 black and white photograph ‘A Great Day in Harlem’ and the result is a landmark group portrait of the global Lindy Hop community featuring some of its most influential and important figures.

A partial list of some of the legendary dancers and Savoy Ballroom connections involved includes:
Frankie Manning, Norma Miller, Dawn Hampton, Eleanor Watson (Whitey's Lindy Hopper, In Radio City Revels), Ruthie Rhinegold (Whitey's Lindy Hopper), Sugar Sullivan (Harvest Moon Ball Champion, Jivadeer, Rocket), Sonny Allen (Harvest Moon Ball Champion, Founder of the Rockets), Gigi Brown (Harvest Moon Ball Champion, Mama Lou Parks Dancer, State Department Africa Tour), Gloria Thompson (Mama Lou Parks Dancer, State Department Africa Tour, Harvest Moon Ball Finalist, Savoy Ballroom Dancer), Coley Wallace (Savoy Ballroom Bouncer), and Helen Banks (Savoy Ballroom Dancer, Appeared in Soundies).

Fun Fact: Lennart Westerlund, one of the founders of Herräng Dance Camp in Sweden could not make the trip, so to represent him in the photo Frankie Manning is holding a Kermit the Frog on his shoulder!

✨ CLASS REVIEW! ✨

Whoop WHOOP! Last night’s classes were an absolute blast 💥

Level 1 triple stepped their way to success, cruising through a merry mix of authentically led 6 and 8 Count basics where in the words of Rob - ’It felt like we were really dancing!’

Then Level 2 worked hard to play hard resulting in some super Sailor Kicks! We conquered not one but TWO cool footwork variations for entries and found our own creative ways to exit in STYLE, dabbling in the art of positive manifestation in between 😂

Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys will be swing, swing, swingin’ at the Mustang Bar on Friday night from 7pm, what a perfect chance to cut a rug with your new moves!

The beauty of this wonderful dance is that the magic it creates is never-ending (which is why we love it so much) and last night was no exception. Thanks for being a part of it, friends! 💛

✨ CLASS REVIEW! ✨

YES North Perth! You with your smiles and great energy and downright A-Game; you ROCK!

Kate, Oscar and David joined us in Level 1 where we kick stepped our way through some super Side by Side Charleston and GEE did we have some fun! While Level 2 had a blast playing with some footwork flourishes; opening up the conversation in a partnership to creatively inspire each other. There were free range Heel Pops and Outs-and-Ins, followed by a perfect mix of the two before some led Heel Pops in Closed to steal the show!

OOF. Boogie Down South 2026, my heart is FULL! What a phenomenal weekend of learning, growing and playing 🌟

From the awe inspiring workshops driven by exceptionally talented and wholeheartedly humble instructors, to the EPIC musical entertainment and slick organisation of it all that emanates a seamlessly relaxed yet so incredibly energetic vibe, this event blows me away more each year.

Thank you Lindsey and the team at South West Swing for the gift of this wholesome swing dance exchange. Year in year out it is nourishment for the soul guaranteed ❤️

✨ CLASS REVIEW! ✨

Stop it right there North Perth - WHAT A NIGHT!

Level 1 got their geek on about pulse and just how much it contributes to a partnership, before tackling the Swing Out from Open with style and smiles. Then this month’s Specialty Class in Level 2 was a SPECTACULAR scene as we got under the hood of the Swing Out, tinkered with our technique and workshopped our way to some very well oiled results! There were excellent questions, great conversations and thought provoking revelations, but most importantly there were some of the savviest and SWEETEST Swing Outs we’ve ever seen! Well done, team!

Adam Hall and the Velvet Playboys are filling the floor at the Mustang Bar on Friday night from 7pm, and Boogie Down South kicks off its five day swing dance extravaganza in Busselton the same night!

Let’s Boogie!
