Our Year 10 students recently got behind the wheel of some important road safety lessons as part of the Rotary Youth Driver Awareness (RYDA) program.

With many students approaching the age when they will begin driving, or spending more time as passengers with friends who are, RYDA is all about building good habits and making safer choices before they become critical.

Across a series of practical and interactive sessions, students explored everything from hazard perception and decision-making to the responsibilities that come with being a passenger. They also took a closer look at the ‘Fatal 5’: speed, fatigue, distraction, alcohol and drugs, and failing to wear a seatbelt.

The day provided plenty of opportunities for students to think about how seemingly small decisions can have serious consequences, and the role they can play in keeping themselves and their friends safe on the road.

RYDA is delivered across the state in partnership with Rotary Tasmania with sessions led by road safety professionals, driving instructors, police, crash survivors and drug and alcohol educators.

Every conversation matters.

National Child Protection Week begins today (6–12 September), with this year’s theme, Every Conversation Matters: Shifting Conversation to Action.

At The Friends’ School, keeping children and young people safe, supported and heard is not something we focus on for one week of the year. It is an ongoing commitment woven into the way we care for our students and build a safe, respectful and inclusive school community.

Throughout the year, our Primary, Middle and Senior Schools undertake age-appropriate learning and activities that support students to understand relationships, wellbeing, boundaries, consent, online safety, help-seeking and how to speak up when something doesn’t feel right. Our staff also engage in ongoing safeguarding, child safety and wellbeing practices and professional learning.

Most importantly, we want our students to know that their voices matter and that there are trusted adults around them who will listen, take them seriously and support them.

This National Child Protection Week, we’re reminded that conversations are important - but they need to lead to action.

Every conversation matters. Every action matters. And every one of us has a role to play in helping children and young people feel safe, valued and supported.

Problem-solving + teamwork + a little friendly competition = mathematical magic...

Our Senior School mathematicians recently put this formula to the test at the Mathematical Association of Tasmania (MAT) Maths Relays at Rosny College, competing against teams from across Tasmania in a fast-paced day of mathematical problem-solving and collaboration.

And the results? Looking pretty good:

Our Year 10 team, Emily C, Zoe L, Theo L and Maddox D, achieved 2nd place, while our Year 12 IB team, Devli N, Ruby M, Angus M and Jem H, also secured 2nd place. Our Year 12 TCE team, Will D, Luke M, Daniel C and Issy J, finished in 3rd place.

Congratulations to all of our Year 9–12 students who represented the School. They tackled some tricky problems, worked together under pressure and showed plenty of mathematical thinking and team spirit.

Because sometimes the best answer isn't just solving the problem. It's knowing who to solve it with.

What a wonderful Book Week we had across our Primary and Middle Schools, celebrating this year’s theme, “Symphony of Stories”.

From classrooms filled with guest readers and students sharing their favourite characters, to creative activities in our libraries, dress-ups, bookworms, badges, quizzes and plenty of time simply spent reading, it was a week full of stories, imagination and connection.

In the Primary School, students enjoyed morning read-alouds, special assemblies, lunchtime library activities, guest readers and a Friday of book-themed festivities led by our Year 5 and 6 students who treated our younger students with incredible care and leadership. In the Middle School, students embraced the opportunity to dress as favourite book characters or take inspiration from music, while the library became a hub of creativity and discovery throughout the week.

A very special thank you to our wonderful school librarians, Sharon, Catherine, Leesa, Nicole and Jayne, for all the ways you inspire and nurture a love of books and reading throughout the year, and especially for the thoughtful touches that made Book Week such a celebration.

And thank you to all our volunteer readers, including parents, friends and staff, who shared stories with our students. There is something pretty special about having someone take the time to sit down and read a book with you.

Book Week may be over, but we hope the stories, characters and ideas discovered along the way continue to inspire plenty more reading.

What book did you discover, rediscover or fall in love with during Book Week?

There was plenty of energy, talent and live music at The Friends’ School’s annual Battle of the Bands last week, with student bands from across the Middle and Senior Schools taking to the stage at the Farrall Centre.

Congratulations to our Middle School bands, with Tim Tams taking out first place and Cello Fellows named runners-up. Honey Problems and Some People were hot on their heels, making for a very close competition.

In the Senior School, WWCD took out first place, with an honourable mention to Amelia C and Lincoln P for their impressive Dolly Parton tribute, which they learned on the very same day!

And then there was the much-anticipated staff band, Working Towards, featuring Charlie B, Joe B, Peter S and Damian C, making their debut and proving that the staff can hold their own on stage too.

A huge thank you to our Music team and all the staff who organised, supervised, attended and supported the evening. With entry fees helping to raise funds for the Migrant Resource Centre Tasmania, it was a fantastic night of music for a great cause.

Science came to life at Friends’ this National Science Week, with our Year 11 IB Diploma students exploring how scientific knowledge can be used to respond to real-world challenges.

As part of their Collaborative Science Project, students investigated the risks associated with thunderstorms before turning their research into practical resources for the wider community. Working collaboratively, they developed a science-backed policy document, community brochure and seven-minute presentation to share their findings with peers and staff.

The project challenged students to do more than understand the science. They needed to evaluate evidence, communicate complex information clearly and consider how scientific knowledge can inform decisions that affect our communities.

We also congratulate Marius C and Freya K D, who represented Friends’ at the annual National Science Week reception at Government House last Monday. Bringing together students and members of Tasmania’s scientific community, the event provided an opportunity to meet scientists and researchers, exchange ideas and hear about some of the issues shaping science today.

National Science Week 2026 explored the theme ‘Seeds of Science: Nurturing Knowledge for All’, celebrating curiosity, discovery and the importance of making science accessible and meaningful to everyone.

From investigating thunderstorms to connecting with Tasmania’s scientific community, our students have embraced the spirit of this year’s theme by asking questions, sharing knowledge and putting their learning into action.

There was plenty of energy, teamwork and House spirit at this year’s Years 7–12 Aquatics Carnival, with more than 200 students taking to the water at the Doone Kennedy Hobart Aquatic Centre.

The new Ducky Relay and House Volleyball brought a fresh dimension to the day, with students embracing the chance to compete, work together and earn valuable House points. Mather made an impressive start in the pool and continued their strong form across the new events, ultimately taking home the 2026 Aquatics Carnival title by 221 points.

There were some outstanding individual performances throughout the day. Max S broke a 13-year-old U14 Boys 50m backstroke record, while Lily B claimed wins in the U15 Girls 50m and 100m freestyle and 50m butterfly. Lachlan D had a remarkable carnival, breaking both the U16 50m and 100m freestyle records, which had stood since 2015 and 2007 respectively.

The day finished with the Champions Races, where Lachlan D and Lily B added another win to their impressive days, taking out the male and female races.

Congratulations to all students who competed, supported their Houses and helped create such a fun and spirited carnival. A big thank you also to our staff and service students for helping make the day such a success.
