On the 20th of August, we, Mia and Eva, ran a kicking fundraiser called Kicking for MND to raise money and awareness for Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

We almost raised the money that we wanted to raise. The money that we raised is being donated to FightMND and the money will be helping them to find a cure for MND as at the moment there is no cure for MND.

MND is a name that has been given to many diseases that affect the nerves, that are known as motor neurons, which are found in the brain and the spinal cord which send messages to activate the muscles in the body. The life expectancy for MND is approximately 27 months from diagnosis. 10% of the cases are inherited and 60% of the cases in Australia are male and the other 40% are female. 2,000+ Australians are living with MND and there are 2 new diagnoses and 2 deaths everyday in Australia from MND alone.

🏆 Congratulations to our winners:

Junior Year Levels: Jacob Richens
Middle Year Levels: Jake Balaz
Senior Year Levels: Xavier Wiese

As part of our partnership with The Resilience Project, we welcomed 3 players from the to come and visit NGSC and talk to our Year 9 & 10 Excellence In Sport students about how they apply The Resilience Project themes to their mental preparation for football and how they bounce back after a tough performance.

Our EIS students were full of great questions and picked the brains of Jay Polkinghorn, Joe Pike & Cillian Burke to learn how to get the mental edge on their competition. The players and students also took some time to add to our newly erected Gratitude Wall, which has been provided by the Cats, to provide the opportunity for our students to share who, where and what they are grateful for in their lives.

NGSC is extremely grateful that these players made the time to come to our school and the support of the Geelong Cats to promote gratitude, empathy and mindfulness in our college.

Julie Maine, Learning Specialist at North Geelong Secondary College (NGSC), has been awarded a Teaching Impact Fellowship with the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership.

The Fellowship recognises graduates of the Academy’s year-long Teaching Excellence Program and supports Victoria’s most accomplished teachers to lead evidence-informed improvement in their own schools. Julie is bringing that work home to NGSC.

From Semester 2, 2026, Julie will use her Fellowship to lead NGSC into the Melbourne Assessment Community (MAC), putting next-generation assessment at the heart of teaching and learning. Drawing on Melbourne Metrics resources, she will support the school to strengthen student agency and build a shared understanding of competency-based assessment.

Julie will also lead a Year 7 English pilot, building staff expertise in competency-based assessment and laying the foundations for future credentialling of Year 7 learning.

A fantastic opportunity to strengthen assessment practice and put student agency front and centre at NGSC.

Congratulations, Julie!
