You told her to hand over the phone. She wouldn't. So you raised the stakes. No weekend at her friend's place. More chores. Grounded on top of it, unless she just handed it over.

Eventually she does. Not because anything's been agreed or understood between you, but because the phone became the lesser of four evils. Somewhere underneath it, she's already worked out that if she plays along for long enough, she might get it back sooner.

That's not remorse. That's strategy.

Here's the bit that doesn't get talked about enough. The real cost was never the Xbox, or the grounding, or the lost weekend. It was the story you never got to hear underneath the lie.

There are four people in the counselling room.
Two adults. And two younger selves: one reaching for reassurance, the other pulling away for safety.

She experiences his silence as abandonment, so she moves closer, pushes harder and tries to get a response.

He experiences her urgency as threat, so he goes quiet, withdraws and tries to create enough distance to feel safe.

Each response confirms the other person’s fear.
And suddenly, you’re having the same enormous fight about the dishwasher again.

The dishes matterand yet they’re rarely responsible for the whole weight of the reaction.

This is why relationship counselling can sometimes give couples better language and genuinely useful tools, while the same conflict keeps returning. Those tools are difficult to reach when your nervous system has already decided something much older and more dangerous is happening.

I’ve written a new article about what children, exhaustion and the pressure of family life can reveal within a relationship, and why working with your own unresolved wiring may change what becomes possible between you.

A little announcement. I've started writing occasional guest pieces for mother by Earthside, in their Roots section, alongside some genuinely lovely parenting writers.

The first is It's Not About the Shoes, on why the anger that shows up over something small, shoes, toast, a missing sock, is almost never actually about the small thing.

The second is Mum, Go Away, for every mother who's been suddenly, devastatingly rejected by her own toddler in favour of the other parent. Why it happens, whether it's ever coming back, and what it's often quietly touching in you.

I only do this kind of guest writing occasionally, when it feels like the right fit, so if either of these speak to where you're at right now, I'd love for you to go and have a read. And if you've got a mum in your life who needs one of these today, feel free to send it her way.

What if your child did the thing that usually sets your whole system firing…

and it just didn’t?

They’re still crying.

You’re still tired.

The moment is still difficult.

But there’s suddenly space where the reaction used to be.

You’re not remembering to breathe.
You’re not reaching for the script.
You’re not white-knuckling your way through staying calm.

You’re just… there.

Present.

That’s the distinction I’m exploring in Episode 37 of The Family Architect.

Because resolution isn’t getting increasingly skilled at managing the same trigger.

It’s when something changes in the nervous system and the trigger itself begins to land differently.

After three episodes exploring attachment wounds, protection programmes and those tiny two seconds before reaction, we’re finally talking about what happens when the underlying material changes.

If you’ve spent years learning how to manage yourself, this is the episode I’ve been building towards.

You know the advice.

Take a deep breath.
Pause.
Use the gentle parenting script.
Choose your response.

And sometimes you can.

Then there are the moments where the reaction happens before you can reach any of it.

That distinction matters.

The breathing technique lives somewhere you have to consciously access. The threat response is already moving.

Breathing can help slow escalation. Scripts can be incredibly useful when you have the capacity to access them.

But neither changes the underlying wiring that made your nervous system assess the moment as threatening in the first place.

So if you’ve ever thought, “Why can’t I use the tools when I need them most?”, I want you to hear this conversation.

The tools may not be the part that’s failing.

You cannot talk your way out of something that was stored before you had words.

And you cannot reason your way past a response that fires faster than reason.

This is where so many mothers become frustrated with themselves.

You understand the pattern.

You’ve talked about where it came from.

You know your child isn’t actually threatening you.

And your body still reacts.

Because insight and physiology are different layers of the work.

When something is held at the nervous system level, we need to work with the nervous system too.

For me, this is one of the most important distinctions between understanding why you react and actually changing what happens when the moment arrives.

Sometimes your child’s big feelings land in your body with far more intensity than the moment itself seems to explain.

That doesn’t mean you’re imagining it.

Your nervous system may be adding the weight of older experiences to what is happening now.

A child is upset.

Your body remembers intensity as danger.

And suddenly the moment feels heavier, sharper, more urgent than it actually is.

This is why I keep talking about resolution.

Because when the stored material is actually processed at the level where it lives, the nervous system no longer has to assess today through the accumulated load of yesterday.

The same child.

The same emotion.

A very different internal experience.

A lot of parenting strategies help you keep the lid on.

Pause.

Breathe.

Walk away.

Try not to explode.

And those tools can absolutely matter.

But keeping the lid on and reducing the pressure underneath it are two different things.

Resolution is about what happens when the nervous system no longer believes it needs the old protection programme at the same intensity.

That little girl inside you built that response because she needed it.

It worked.

And it kept working because nobody ever came back to tell her the emergency was over.

That’s the work.

Not endlessly managing the reaction.

Helping the nervous system finally put it down.

Have you ever thought:

“I knew I didn’t want to react like that, but it happened before I could stop it.”

That matters.

Because the reactions you can’t seem to interrupt are often happening faster than conscious thought.

Attachment wounds don’t sit neatly in the part of the brain that reasons things through.

They live in the nervous system.

So under pressure, the protection programme can fire before your thinking brain has had a chance to choose.

That’s why so many strategies feel like they work beautifully in calm moments and disappear when the stakes are high.

The problem may not be that you’re bad at using the tools.

It may be that the tools are trying to intervene too late.

Your child is crying.

And suddenly you can feel yourself becoming overwhelmed too.

You know they need you to stay steady. You know what you’ve read about co-regulation. You may even know exactly what you want to say.

Yet your body is already somewhere else.

Because sometimes your child’s distress activates distress that was already stored in you.

Their emotion arrives, your nervous system recognises something familiar, and now you’re dealing with what’s happening inside your own body while trying to respond to them.

That’s why knowing exactly what your child needs can still feel impossible to access in the moment.

There are two nervous systems in the room.

And yours matters too.
