Now is the time to control cape tulip! 🌸

Recent rainfall has triggered the emergence of cape tulip, one of the region’s most troublesome pasture w**ds. As leaves begin to appear, now is the ideal time for landholders to inspect their paddocks and plan control before plants flower.

Cape tulip is a bulb w**d that is highly toxic to livestock and can spread quickly through pastures if left unmanaged. There are two types of cape tulip - one-leaf cape tulip and two-leaf cape tulip. While one-leaf cape tulip is the species most landholders will encounter, two-leaf cape tulip is also present in some localised areas and is worth keeping an eye out for.

Book review and summary: Designing Hope, Visions to Shape Our Future by Sarah Housley

(Join us to talk all HOPE and FUTURE related books on Thursday 3rd Sept, 1.30pm, free arvo tea provided)

Sarah Housley presents four possible future scenarios aimed to create positive visions for the future. She acknowledges the critical importance of a hopeful future. I enjoyed her positive outlook, particularly around the concepts of more-than-human and degrowth. The solarpunk and metaverse concepts challenged me, but I see the appeal to younger folk.

In more-than human, Housley explores ecological ideas including rights of nature, regenerative agriculture and plant -based diets among other ideas as part of her futures design. She acknowledges the challenges associated with change and that individual changes can become larger-scale, possibly leading towards mainstream adoption, even environmental empathy.

Her second hope is degrowth, planned reduction in terms of production and consumption. Housley discusses the complexities, economically, politically and linguistically. Redesigning our systems towards equitable distribution of resources could lead to less meaning more, recognising the impact of both individual choices and government policies.

Solarpunk’s Manifesto inquires into a ‘sustainable future’ and processes. Through blogs, mood boards, books and magazines solarpunk has spread, been Disneyfied and entered the gaming domain. Solar power, technology and creative ideas move towards direct environmental action and solarpunk moves towards a liveable future.

In her fourth message for hope Housley investigates metaverse and virtual worlds. Her positive approach is reflected in many examples including gaming, virtual reality and natureverse. This chapter provided a glimpse into latest virtual technologies and Roblox for those hooked in this space.

Sarah Housley has provided a positive approach to developing futures visions which may co-exist and of course there is much room for further designs which she encourages in the last section of her book inviting call to action. An enjoyable and hopeful approach to positive futures.

Ministry of the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson • At our next Fleurieu Environment Centre Book Club, we'll be discussing The Ministry for the Future by Kim Stanley Robinson, and other hopeful eco-futures books.

This is a thought-provoking and well researched Sci-Fi novel that imagines how humanity might respond to the climate crisis over the coming decades. It's set in the near future when climate change impacts are already inflicting terrible losses on human life and ecosystems, but the author does not leave the reader abandoned with the grief. The adventure story is one of resilience, personal agency and many hopeful options to save ourselves.

Our discussion will focus on the theme of hope and how positive visions of the future can inspire action today. Together, we'll explore the ideas presented in the novel, discuss which solutions seem achievable, and consider how communities like ours can contribute to building a sustainable future.

Everyone is welcome, whether you've read the entire book or are simply interested in the conversation. Join us for an engaging discussion about one of the most important questions of our time: What kind of future do we want to create?

Wed 5th Aug on the Fleurieu with Landscapes Hills and Fleurieu

Planning our water future – Hindmarsh and Inman River catchments – Wednesday 5 August at Inman Valley.

Water resources across the Mount Lofty Ranges are under pressure, and our Water Allocation Plans are being updated to better reflect changing conditions and community needs.

We’re inviting everyone who lives, works or cares about our region to take part in a Catchment Conversation, it's an opportunity to share your perspectives, ask questions and contribute local knowledge to this important process.

Water management across the Hindmarsh and Inman River catchments focuses on maintaining a productive agricultural landscape while supporting unique environments and wetlands, including Fleurieu Peninsula Swamps.

This is an important chance to reflect on how water is shared and used across our catchments, and how these choices affect our environment, farms, towns and communities. Healthy creeks and wetlands support native wildlife, productive landscapes and resilient communities, and maintaining them relies on shared understanding and solutions.
