A new supervisor may suddenly need to delegate, give feedback, manage conflict and make decisions they were never taught to make.

Promoting from within can be a great move — but people still need support to grow into the new role.

If the same people are always fixing problems, checking work or answering every question, another hire is not automatically the first answer.

Start with: what does the team need to be able to do more confidently?

Sometimes the answer is recruitment. Sometimes it is developing the people you already have.

You don't need to have everything figured out before you have a conversation.

A capability conversation isn't a sales pitch, and it doesn't come with a predetermined outcome. It's simply a chance to talk through where you're at, ask the questions you actually have, and get a clearer sense of whether RPL is worth exploring further.

That kind of clarity is often more useful than trying to work everything out alone in advance.

RPL involves a few distinct steps, and it helps to know the difference.

An enquiry is just that — a question, with no commitment attached. A capability conversation is a chance to talk through your situation. A formal assessment is where an assessor compares what you can demonstrate, and appropriate evidence, against relevant requirements. That leads to an assessment decision, which is different again from recognition, an application or enrolment.

None of these steps skip ahead of the others, and none of them happen automatically.

Some of the most capable people in a workplace are also the hardest to spot on paper.

Their contribution shows up in how problems get solved quietly, how newer team members find their feet, and how things keep running smoothly — not necessarily in a job title or a formal record.

Recognising that doesn't automatically entitle anyone to a particular outcome. But it's a reason to look a little closer at the capability already present in your team, and to understand what a formal assessment process can and can't tell you about it.
