Introducing Early Intervention and School Readiness at Bridge Learning.

Meet Rose …
leading the way for our youngest students, 4 to 7 years.

Rose is an experienced, passionate and highly professional teacher with an extensive background of teaching in primary, intermediate and early childhood sectors. Teaching experience has included two years in Special Education and running a Montessori Pre-school.

Rose’s background and training include a strong foundation in developmental and educational psychology, with specialist training in the identification of learning/behavioural difficulties and intervention. Rose spent 15 years working under SPELD NZ as both a tutor and a Psychoeducational assessor. Rose is highly competent in addressing the individual needs of students, with a focus on the foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
Having moved to Australia, Rose has worked at a small private school as a Learning Support Coordinator and has also done private tutoring for students at both the pre-school and primary levels up to Year 6.

Helping your child to read and write.
A free course for parents and carers.
• The course is for parents or carers who want to give their children aged 4 to 6 years a good start in learning to read and spell using a phonics program. It is not really designed for teachers or for helping older children who have reading difficulties.
• It is conducted by the creators of the Sounds-Write linguistic phonics program that we use at Bridge Learning.

Get It Done!
Don’t let panic strike (as it often does at this stage of the term).
5 Steps to Making Secondary School Workload Manageable…

1. Make a list of tasks and due dates for each subject.
Refer to school assessment calendar or term overviews provided for each subject. If unsure, email relevant teachers.
2. Record important dates into a calendar.
Assessments, holidays and other commitments you need to work around.
3. Break each task down into steps as necessary.
What needs to be done first, second, etc?
4. Estimate time needed to complete each step.
5. Prioritise and schedule.
Work backward from the due date.
Allow time for unexpected setbacks.
Schedule when you will complete each step for each task, working around your other weekly commitments.
Consider constructing a schedule for weekly routines to prioritise what is important.
You can do this in a diary, on a list or calendar (if big enough).

Coach Jack, a cornerstone of our team here at Young Engineers. As he nears the completion of his studies at UQ, pursuing a Bachelor of Science (Honours) with a major in Computer Science and minors in Physics and Mathematics, his passion for education and mentoring shines brighter than ever.

Repeated Reading - a great tool for reading fluency.

Repeated reading of the same text has been studied extensively and is well recognised as an effective, evidence-based approach to boosting reading fluency and confidence.

(see Padeliadu & Giatzidou, 2018, for a review of eight meta-analyses).

How to be effective…
1. Choose a passage that the student can read with very few errors (one error for every 10 words in the initial read is a good guide).
2. The passage should be readable in 1-2 minutes (50-200 words).
3. Model fluent reading of the passage.
4. Preview potentially unknown or difficult words before they start.
5. Listen to the student read the passage and prompt to correct errors after three seconds. (Often simply pointing to the word to indicate to have another go, or to highlight the sounds they need to focus on correcting, is all that is needed).
6. Provide positive and corrective feedback after each reading.
7. Have the student read the passage at least four times (or until really confident, fluent and easy).
8. Plan for 10 to 15 minutes per fluency lesson, ideally three times a week.
A timer can be used to add to the motivational factor – older students may like to graph their words per minute and have a lovely, visual reminder of their progress. We do need to remind them though, that speed is not the only important factor - accuracy, comprehension and expression all matter.

Hello, so I have a Google business page now. Probably should have done that a while back but nonetheless, we will get there. I'd be interested to know if it is findable by others, because the website wasn't, until we fixed a few things last week. Also, apparently I need Google reviews on the business page, to have a presence at all. I hate to ask, but if you have worked with me or I have taught your child and you have time, would you do a quick review for me please???
I really just want to get on with the teaching the kids bit...

Individual Tutoring is the Key for Learning Difficulty
3 Reasons Why…
1. Error Correction is vital if you are trying to break bad habits or fix misconceptions.
There can be no ‘leaving them to it.’ Not even when you have taught it brilliantly, when you think they’ve got it, or when they have done it correctly many times. You need to sit beside and watch everything they do. They need to do it correctly, every time. Habits are difficult to break and have often been there for some time. If a child reverts back to them, even for a short while when the tutor is with someone else, that practise is reinforcing the error. It’s too easy to do more harm than good ☹

2. Exactly the right instructional level is essential.
With 1:1 tutoring, there is no rushing over something because the others are ready to move on. We need to stop and work exactly where your child needs to work, to revisit a skill as much as they need to before we move on. Tutoring is more efficient and effective this way 😊

3. Response to instruction is hugely increased with individual tutoring.
If it takes more time to process a response, we can wait. If a child is less confident, it is much less intimidating. They can ‘have a go’ more often because the work is at a level they can have good success with. This build confidence, skills and motivation 😊
