~ Homeschool ~ this week in our Spanish homeschooling class we learnt the colours:

❤️ rojo
💙 azul
💛 amarillo
💚 verde

And clothes:

👕 la camiseta
👗 la falda (skirt)
👖 los pantalones
👒 el sombrero
🧣 la bufanda

And played MANY games to practice our new vocab. Then we got to create our self portrait by choosing what clothes we wanted to wear and coloured them in. ¡Qué divertido! We had so much fun!

What’s the time?

In Spanish we ask “¿Qué hora es?” which literally means “what hour is it”. To answer we always use either:

🕐 Es
🕑 Son

We use “es” only when what follows the verb is the number “one”. For example:

➡️ Es la una y media = “it’s one and a half” or 1:30.
➡️ Es la una menos cuarto = “it’s one minus a quarter” or 12:45.

All other numbers, because they are inherently plural, we use “son”.

➡️ son las dos = 2:00
➡️ son las once y cuarto = 11:15

🕰 15 minutes past or before the hour can be described using “cuarto” which is 1/4 (of the hour) and half an hour is “media”.

➡️ son las tres y cuarto = 3:15
➡️ son las cuatro y media = 4:30

⏰ any minutes past the hour up to and including 30mins we say the hour, “y” and the minutes:

➡️ son las dos Y cinco = 2:05
➡️ son las siete Y veinte = 7:20

⏰ however any minutes after 30 gets a little more complicated. We count backwards from the next hour using “menos” and the minutes from the hour:

➡️ son las siete MENOS diez = 6:50
➡️ son las once MENOS veinticinco = 10:35

So in order to tell the time, you need to think of a few things differently but don’t get disheartened! It just takes a bit of practice! And how interesting is it to see how we can view the world just slightly differently to each other

What a week!

After being flooded in with no power, we are SO ready to jump back into our regular routine with enthusiasm!

We were extremely lucky not to have had any damage or flooding in our house and my heart goes out to those friends and members of the community who had their houses flooded. There’s still a lot of recovery for our little community. But we’re all itching to get back to normal at the same time.

So classes will resume as normal as of next week! ¡Cuántas ganas tengo!

🌹Taking enrolments now 🌹

We will have three classes open at for next term:

Level 1 - Monday 12:30-2:30pm & Wednesday evening (time to be announced)

Level 2 - Monday 10am-12pm

Level 1 is best for complete beginners with zero to minimal prior knowledge. Maybe you have been studying on duolingo and know some phrases, or maybe you know nothing at all!

And Level 2 is best for people who may already have some basic knowledge including things like: family members, food preferences, directions, personal descriptions, clothes, numbers to 100 etc.

If you’re interested in joining us but you’re not sure what level you may be best suited to, send me a message and let’s have a chat!

We are already almost halfway through our first course of the year 🤯 which means I will be opening up expressions of interest for the next course scheduled to start on the 28th March.

There will be two levels again and three times available including one evening, so please let me know if you are hoping to participate in the next round! The evening class (day tba) will be on a first come first served basis so get in quickly!

~ Do you watch any tv in Spanish? ~ if not, then start today! One of the easiest ways to practice your listening skills and improve your vocabulary is to binge! It may seem daunting at first and it may very well seem like hard work but I promise you that it does get easier and easier and soon enough you won’t need to rewind anything! 🙌🏼

Here are some of the Spanish speaking shows that I’ve watched on Netflix recently that I have enjoyed:

📺 La Casa de las Flores (Mexico)

📺 La Casa de Papel (España) (I can’t recommend this one enough!!!)

📺 Las Cinco Juanas (Mexico)

📺 100 Días para Enamorarnos (Mexico)

I have also heard good things about Narcos.

A common difficulty when learning Spanish is the difference between the verbs ser and estar which both mean ”to be”. The information in the pic is a popular way to remember which verb is used for what. Let’s break it down:

SER

🌹 DESCRIPTION - Ella es alta ~ She is tall.

🌹 OCCUPATION ~ Soy cocinera ~ I’m a chef.

🌹 CHARACTERISTIC ~ Eres divertido ~ You are fun.

🌹TIME ~ Son las 9 y cuarto ~ it’s 9:15

🌹ORIGIN ~ Nosotros somos de Australia ~ we’re from Australia

🌹RELATIONSHIP ~ Es mi hijo ~ he’s my son. (POSSESION ~ Es mi casa ~ it’s my house).

ESTAR

🌹POSITION ~ Está a la izquierda ~ it’s on the left.

🌹 LOCATION ~ Él está en casa ~ he’s at home.

🌹 ACTION ~ estoy hablando ~ I’m talking.

🌹CONDITION ~ está roto ~ it’s broken.

🌹 EMOTION ~ están felices ~ they’re happy.

~ Café con leche ~ if you’re a coffee drinker you’ll need to know how to order a good coffee first thing in morning before you’ve even had your caffeine hit 😱 sounds like a nightmare? Let me help you!

So we’ve probably all heard the phrase “café con leche por favor” which is a perfectly fine way to order a coffee, but I’m going to show you a few other common ways to order and a few different coffees in case you’d like to be a little bit fancy!

☕️ café con leche = literally means “coffee with milk.” It’s similar to a flat white.

☕️ cortado = literally “short” coffee. This is a shot of coffee with an equal amount of milk.

☕️ café solo = literally means “just coffee”. Basically an espresso.

☕️ café americano = literally means “American coffee”. Shot of coffee with extra hot water. Essentially black coffee.

You can also ask for un café latte or capuchino 👌🏼

Ok so now that you know what coffee you’d like, here are a few ways to order them:

🙏🏼 un café con leche por favor = a coffee with milk please

🙏🏼 quiero un cortado por favor = I’d like a cortado please

🙏🏼 me das un café solo por favor = can you give me a café solo please

🙏🏼 me pones un café Americano por favor = can you “put” me an American coffee please.

All of these expressions are common in Spain so you will sound more like a local if you use them! Spain also has many more types of coffee (with condensed milk, with ice, with alcohol etc etc) so if you’re a real coffee connoisseur, just let me know and I can do a Coffee Part 2 ☕️🤎

One (of many many) things I miss about Spain is the coffee, it is seriously good coffee. You know where else you can get good coffee? Right next to our classroom at the Sangha Room
