The E shape barre chord is a standard guitar chord shape that's similar to an open E chord. It's used to create major chords on the 6th string and other unique chord voicings.

How to play the E shape barre chord

Place your first finger, or barre, slightly rolled over onto its side

Position your thumb at the back of the guitar neck

Press down firmly, but not too hard

Tips for playing the E shape barre chord

Check each note to make sure it's clear

Adjust your fingers if any notes are muted, buzzing, or dead

If the 3rd string isn't ringing out, make sure your 4th finger isn't touching it

You can also use the E form to create minor and minor 7th barre chords. The bass note of the chord determines the type of chord.
