Musical Interludes has been operating for the last 18 years, running Mini Maestros classes, Piano Lessons and Music Theory classes in Essendon. This year it was time for a change and we moved into our brand new Niddrie Studio on Keilor Road, it's an amazing space for learning and creating. We are proud to empower generations of confident and engaged learners, who are best placed to succeed in their chosen endeavours. Piano Lessons start from age 3 and have no limits! You are able to start Private Lessons at any time, so feel free to get in touch to discuss availability. Piano Lessons follow a traditional method and you have the option to prepare for AMEB exams. Group classes are also available, however there is no late intake into classes that are already established.

The 40 piece challenge is studio wide (including me!) and is to encourage learning a wide range of pieces.

The idea is to move away from an exam focused syllabus where students only learn repertoire for an exam before moving on to the next exam. This means students aim to learn a range of repertoire ranging from easier to more challenging pieces to experience a repertoire rich environment.

Benefits of repertoire rich lessons include:

🎶exploration of different genres and types of piano playing
🎶a balance of easier short term pieces and long term pieces at a higher level or difficulty
🎶motivator to practice

In beginner lessons at Musical Interludes we have shifted away from note (letter) based music reading and moved towards intervallic reading.

In intervallic music reading we start with a landmark note and then read direction and distance of the next note. This helps students recognise patterns that comprise melody (horizontal reading) and harmony (vertical reading) and to think about notes in a functional and auditory way. You can think of it as recognising sounds that groups of letters make (i.e. 'th') rather than spelling out the individual letters by name. We start with single intervals and gradually expand to recognise scale and chord patterns.

That's not to say we have totally abandoned the music alphabet, we still use it in keyboard geography and in later stages of reading. It does have value to add as students advance.
