Confidence and competence are not the same thing—and the Circle eventually exposes the difference. Some of the most capable practitioners I've known still feel nervous undertaking unfamiliar work, because they know enough to understand its complexity. Conversely, enormous confidence can coexist with very limited ability. A more honest measure: Can you repeat it? Can you explain the principle beneath the gesture, not just reproduce it? Can you adapt when something changes unexpectedly? And—frequently underestimated—do you know when to ask for help? There is no maturity in performing competence we don't actually have.
