High Intensity Interval Training (affectionately known as HIIT) is arguably the most popular training modality at the moment due to it’s ability to navigate across many different physiological realms. Fat loss seems to be the most common result of HIIT training performed correctly. When performed at maximal efforts, HITT training has been said to provoke what is called Excess Post-Exercise Oxygen Consumption (EPOC). When you feel breathless after a hard session, the body needs as much oxygen as it can get to restore its levels within the body. Like a car engine remains hot after a long drive, so does your body, in a bid to restore homeostasis (balance). In this restorative phase the metabolism is still quite fired up which provokes your body to keep burning calories after the session has finished.

Why Try?: HITT training is one of the most time efficient training styles. It can go from 10 mins to 45 minutes, but to make it an effective use of time, intensity needs to increase if the duration of the session decreases, so those 10 minute sessions need to be performed at maximal levels. You need to be gasping for air by the end! This is a great training style for those that are time poor or don’t have access to a gym. Bodyweight exercises and sprinting can be excellent activities to create a HIIT session as long as you put in 90-100% effort.

Good for: Fat loss and overall conditioning.

- WHY YOU SHOULD ADD BOXING TO YOUR TRAINING -

1. Your endurance skyrockets! - You don’t need to do half marathons to work on your endurance or lung capacity. Not everyone has the joint ability or physical condition to withstand long and repetitive movements. High bursts of intense physical activity increases lung capacity exponentially and will also work on your endurance.

2. ABS OF STEEL - The constant use of full connective muscles that all transfer through the core as you perform rotations with your punches, jabs, boxing combos and kicks work your all the muscles of your core without having to do 10 sets of crunches everyday!

3. Speaking of full muscle use, boxing is one of the most time efficient and effective fat burning workouts imaginable due to the full bodied-nature of the activity and high metabolic training, which means more energy is expended throughout the duration of the session.
