CSAW recently dropped into Design Tasmania after our recent NIFPI projects report meeting. Design Tasmania has a contemporary Tasmanian wood design collection established in 1991. Thank you, Sarah Blacklock and Christina Graham, for hosting such a great event for our staff, students and industry partners. We recommend people stop by Design Tasmania, Launceston, to view their current exhibit. The picture showcases the table from Brodie Neill, which is a fantastic design using Hydrowood.

CSAW has been working with Rose Bay High School to organise the allocation of another round of wood for schools in Tasmania. The timber is on its way to Rose Bay High School, Rosny College and Clarence High School. Due to the foresight of our Director, Professor Gregory Nolan, at the start of the year, this is our second role out, which has already seen some great results from Rose Bay High School. We would like to also thank Scott Fullarton and Karen Gannon, the Business Manager of Rose Bay, and all those involved in making this happen. Well done to Stuart Meldrum and Malcolm Liehr on our team preparing the wood for transport. This has allowed students to work with Nitens (Shining Gum), a Tasmanian Timber grown locally. We are excited to share the results in the future.

The CSAW Project Team was the recipient of the Vice-Chancellors Innovation Award for outstanding contribution to the achievement of innovation to drive change, simplify activities and focus on what matters.

We want to acknowledge the team from UTAS, including Gregory Nolan, Nathan Kotlarewski, Scott Dickson, Stuart Meldrum, Kuluni Millaniyage, Malcolm Liehr, Mark Dewsbury, and Luke Dineen with the assistance from Dylan Graham from Fairbrothers for the River Edge Project.

We are excited by this outstanding achievement, and without the contribution of everyone involved, this would not have been possible. Thank you, UTAS, for this exceptional award. Jian Hou's recent publication on the Effect of Finger Joints on the Stiffness of Fibre Managed E.Nitens Sawn Boards. CSAW is proud to have such fantastic PhD students producing great work. Well done, Jian, on an excellent piece of work.

Fibre-managed E. nitens has the potential to be used as a feedstock for engineered wood products. This resource, however, has a number of strength-reducing features that need to be removed, and the board needs to be re-joint to be useful in greater lengths for timber construction. Jian is one of our amazing PhD students. Her research question is “What is the optimal, reliable structural performance of glulam from fibre-managed plantation E.nitens”. To answer this question, three secondary questions will be answered based on the manufacturing process, including grading the material, finger joint performance, and whole assembly performance.

In Tasmania, there is a substantial amount of plantation fibre-managed E.nitens being grown and harvested. The local timber industry is seeking to use this species as other than a pulp resource, like raw material for glulam. To introduce E.nitens as a new species in glulam, we need a better understanding of the critical performance of the final products to streamline it.

CSAW is sad to see Stuart Melburn, our Technical Officer, fly back to DAF in Queensland, but we appreciate his hard work and the support he has provided to the staff and students in the department. Thank you Stewart we wish you the best and our students and staff look forward to seeing you in the future due to our ongoing relationship with the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries.

CSAW hosted a visit from the Sustainable Timber Tasmania staff showcasing our current students and staff NIFPI projects. It was great to welcome the team from STT to our workplace and connect. Our centre is unique in its delivery of research and development on Tasmania wood products from the UTAS Newnham site. We look forward to their next visit and appreciate everyone's input and attention throughout the day. We are proud to be delivering valuable insight into Nitens and sharing our knowledge on the potential for further development in this area of forestry.

Introducing Gary Fleming, recently appointed as Tasmania's first Wood Encouragement Officer. The Centre for Sustainable Architecture with Wood (CSAW) and the Tasmanian Timber Promotion Board (TTPB) recently established the role jointly. We are excited to have Gary come on board with his vast architectural experience and history of working on multiple timber projects. Gary is passionate about collaborating with industry stakeholders, including project design teams, government agencies, and suppliers, to identify and facilitate project opportunities that increase the use of timber and wood products. He is passionate about the increased use of Tasmanian wood in the built environment.

Gary has been actively working as a project architect in Tasmania for 15 years, with 20 years of industry experience. Prior to studying architecture, Gary had a career in trades and manufacturing, working hands-on with wood and other materials. This appointment is supported by the Tasmanian Government and delivers on a 2021 election commitment. We are thrilled about the opportunities this new role will bring, with the potential to increase the use of wood and timber products in new architectural buildings within Tasmania and Australia.

Dr Louise Wallis is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Architecture and Design. She teaches in the design studio and communications and researches design pedagogy and architectural education. She is particularly interested in how students may learn design thinking skills and processes through different teaching approaches and curriculum design

Louise is a multidisciplinary member of the University of Tasmania Team. Supporting CSAW staff, PhD and Architecture & Design students amongst her various roles at the University. She is currently working on the next stage of the species hotel with the students from Architecture and Design. CSAW will be the home base for the next workshop to complete further homes for wildlife in the coming weeks. Louise is pictured with PhD students Kuluni Millaniyage and Yingwei Liang (Vic).
