POCKETS OF PLAY - We can sometimes get lost in the aesthetics of play. It needs to look new, purpose built and provide a function for it to be considered acceptable play-based learning resources. However, these images are of a little pocket of play. A small area utilized by the children to construct a den for their animals. They didnt need a purpose built cave or a predetermined resource to meet their learning here. They simply needed the space, loose open ended resources (bricks, rocks, sticks, leaves). Look at the detail, the thoughtfulness, the collaboration, the intent. Do you think this rich depth of learning would occur with restricted predetermined resources?

IF THIS ISN’T THE LEVEL OF COMMUNITY SPIRIT, WE DON’T WANT IT- we have always pride ourselves on our commitment to building strong community connections within our service, as well as the local and wider community. We support local business where we can, build connections with our local primary schools and other early childhood settings, take walks out in our community often, host events for our own little preschool community and ensure our own little ACELP community is at the heart of what we do every day. There is something so special about being part of a community- a friendly face, a warm hug, someone to make you laugh, to support you on your hard days, and cheer you on for your best days. Our Engineer children have been exploring citizenship and community this year through their inquiry-based project; talking all things kindness, sportsmanship and support for those around us. We are so excited that our local community sporting team has made it into the grand final, and are so proud to be a part of a community that rallies together in such a huge way to support others! Win or Lose on Sunday, what an incredible display of community partnership Newcastle has shown to our younger generation! UP THE KNIGHTS!

CONSERVATION WHO - Following our Engineers interest in conservation and social justice matters involving Niel the Seal, the Educators decided the children would benefit so much more by being able to have a hands-on learning experience centred around this very topic! At Irukandji Shark & Ray Encounters ~ Anna Bay🏝️ the children were and to explore, touch, feed and most importantly learn about the wonderful work behinds the scene to support marine life conservation.
How incredibly inspiring to see the children being provided with real life opportunities to experience the power of humanity and to further enhance their understanding for the world around them and what they can do to protect and care for the magical creatures of our oceans.

WE MIGHT BE SMALL IN STATURE BUT WE ARE BIG IN VOICE! - The children in our Engineers Room brought forward a concern they had around Neil the Seal down in Tasmania. The children spoke passionately about what they knew of Neil the Seal and shared that knowledge with peers who were unfamiliar with the story of the wayward mischievous seal.
After the children heard that some people wanted to euthanize him they became very impassioned to make a difference and advocate for a more humane solution. Together with their Educators they brainstormed their ideas on what other solutions the Government and people of Tasmania could do to support Niel and the town find a positive outcome for all.
The children drew pictures of their ideas, practiced writing letters to Government officials to get ready to post. The children were given addresses and emails of where they can send their thoughts and ideas and encouraged to be the voice for Niel and demonstrate how passionate they are about the subject at hand.
To see the drive, thoughtfulness, consideration and collaboration of the children, coming together on such an outstanding advocacy project demonstrates that confidence to stand up for what's right and share your voice (no matter how small you are!) makes a difference and should always be shared!

THE THREE CIRCLES OF BEING - Wonderful and proud Wonnarua Aboriginal artist Aunty Michelle created this bright and meaningful artwork on a second hand stool to donate to our service as part of our ongoing partnership with her.
Aunty Michelle explained that the image represents the three circles of being with colors inspired by the rainbow serpent. Connecting the circles of being to the symbol of strength and nurture reflects the partnership we all play on supporting each other, nature and protecting our future.
Such a powerful message reflected through an artistic medium. We challenge you to reflect on how you can promote children's (and your own!) story telling through artistic mediums. The world can be a challenging place so to see the brightness and colours that connect your being to the community around you can be the candle that you hold in dark times.

THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SCHOOL READINESS MYTH - We are sure you've heard this phrase before "they just play all day, that's not really getting them ready for school" or this one, "they need to learn their alphabet and counting before going to school".
Oh my, how this is so very wrong!
What many people don't realise is that the CRITICAL skills that are taught and fostered in early childhood are the skills children will need to be successful at school.
Still don't believe me... Okay so here's the evidence!
The photos you can see are very clear examples of children learning the skills they ACTUALLY need for school readiness. And yes... Some of these photos are of babies learning school readiness skills.
I hear you, you are thinking I must be joking if I think that babies are being taught school readiness skills. Well I'm not joking because here is what teachers in Primary Schools, High Schools and Early Childhood Teachers all agree are the skills children actually need to develop in preparation for school:
*Resilience and persistence
*Emotional regulation when faced with challenges, socially and cognitively
*Executive functioning skills - working memory, attention regulation, task orientation, planning and ex*****on etc.
*Social navigation and negotiation skills
*Confidence in communication
*Competence with exploring mark making and dexterity skills

Now that you know this, reflect on this quote from an amazing kindergarten teacher right here in Newcastle "I need the children to learn how to persist when challenged and develop their executive functioning skills because I don't have time to teach these skills as it's my job to teach them all the academic stuff. They need to have those really important skills before they come or they are on the back foot from day one"

So the next time you are wondering how early childhood education supports children going off to "big school" I want you to remember that a house can't be built without a solid foundation. Therefore, see the amazing work that our educators do everyday shaping, fostering and building your child's learning foundation so that when they get to school they will be on the front foot!

AND JUST WHEN THE OUTSIDE NOISE STARTS TO BECOME TOO MUCH, OUR COMMUNITY SHOWS UP IN A WAY THAT REMINDS US EXACTLY WHY WE DO WHAT WE DO… it’s no secret there is a lot of change happening in the ECEC space at the moment. A lot of burnout, new challenges, negativity and what feels like a never ending line of red tape. At times, the reason we started in this industry gets lost along the way. BUT then, something like a Winter Fair comes along bringing our community together, connecting families, children and our team in an environment that makes you forget about the outside noise, about the constantly changing policies and procedures. And in that moment, we are reminded about the magic in early childhood. The possibilities of connection, community and joy. And just like that, for a moment, we remember that it’s all worth it. We are so grateful for the community that showed up for our first ever Winter Fair today! Thank you to those who donated their time, effort, baking skills and organisation to make it such a magical day! We can’t wait to do it all again next year!

PLANS FOR SATURDAY 27TH JUNE!? We have you covered!! Bring your friends, bring your family, bring your neighbours! It’s our first ever WINTER FAIR and we couldn’t be more excited! Another step in raising funds for our outdoor play space! Come on down to 210 Gosford Road Adamstown between 9-1pm to join in the fun with us! There will be food trucks, a coffee van, a magic show, a trash and treasure stall, arts and crafts and loads more!! We hope to see you there!!
