SHAC Architects

Completed in 2018, the new library and administration building at Trinity Catholic College, Adamstown. The works included demolition of the existing building down to the ground floor slab level and the rebuild of a new structural solution to allow for large open spans and double height spaces.

The library space and plaza forecourt provide a central gathering and orientation space, for use by the school community. The interaction between interior and exterior allows for the use of outdoor spaces as part of the public domain, as well as the internal amphitheatre space which connects out into the landscape.

Each elevation is treated in a different manner to respond to the inherent qualities of the cardinal points they face. The warmth of natural materials were also used to create a feeling of prestige and sombre atmosphere through the use of blackbutt timber flooring, plywood acoustic ceilings and sandstone to the internal spaces.

External façade treatments include the continuation of sandstone cladding, as well as a generous double height glazed wall, facing south to aid in the capture of abundant soft light and additionally providing a window in the machinations of a working library hub inside the busy school environment. As a major aesthetic statement, the building utilised Aramax roofing to create large span internal paces as well as extended roof overhangs to provide protection to the building and the circulation paths surrounding the building.

Located on a hill crest within a river meander, the residence overlooks the river, surrounding paddocks, and distant mountain ranges. Inspired by the Australian farmhouse vernacular, three simple gabled pavilions are arranged around a sheltered courtyard anchored by a central outdoor fireplace. Designed as a prefabricated kit-of-parts, the home was efficiently assembled onsite, minimising construction impacts. The slender forms maximise natural light and cross ventilation, while durable, low-maintenance materials respond to the rural riverside setting. The design celebrates the existing landscape, preserving all trees and carefully framing views of the natural surroundings.

The Mary Mother of Hope Oratory is a shared education facility in Chisholm serving St Bede’s Catholic College, St Aloysius Primary School, and St Nicholas Childcare.

A sacred geometrical shape, the circle symbolises cosmic order, divine perfection, and a connection to nature. The form creates a communal, inclusive worship experience, fostering solidarity and a sense of equality whilst offering repose and equitable sanctum.
Architecture and materiality define the Oratory as uniquely separate from the schools either side, yet speaks of warmth, welcome, and unity.

SHAC is delighted to share that the Newcastle Grammar School, Park Campus received a Commendation in the Education category at the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects Region Architecture Awards, held in Coffs Harbour on Friday 13th February.
 
Newcastle Grammar School, Park Campus is a teaching and learning hub in an old education precinct in Newcastle NSW. It is a place of belonging, a place to celebrate connection to country, site, people, and purpose. 

SHAC sought to nurture the memory of a rich tapestry of sand dunes and strangler figs, old fishing and crabbing grounds, and crystal-clear tributaries, to reflect the architectural response, both across the building fabric and through the boardwalks and paperbarks framing the play spaces.

SHAC is proud to announce Lake Cathie Public School received a Commendation in the Education category at the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects Region Architecture Awards, held in Coffs Harbour on Friday 13th February.
 
The school’s design integrates ecological play spaces, outdoor classrooms, and native landscapes that connect students with the natural environment, encouraging exploration and environmental stewardship. Sustainable strategies - including solar panels, water-sensitive design, food production, a revegetation corridor, and energy-monitoring systems - turn the school itself into a living learning tool.
Lake Cathie Public School stands as a model of adaptable, culturally rich, and environmentally responsible design, leaving a legacy for learning and the Lake Cathie community.

SHAC is incredibly proud to share that St Bede’s Catholic College was named the Overall Education Award winner at the 2026 Australian Institute of Architects Region Architecture Awards, held in Coffs Harbour on Friday 13th February.

SHAC have built a strong relationship with the Catholic Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle, for more than ten years, to deliver five stages of works for St Bede’s Catholic College, Chisholm. The campus masterplan is defined by four learning ‘pillars’ connected by the Peregrine Trail, an organic circulation spine that unites the school community.

SHAC is excited to announce the appointment of Jack Reading to Associate Director.

An experienced architectural designer and landscape architect, Jack commenced his career with SHAC in 2019 as an architectural technician. Since then, he has worked across architectural and landscape practices gaining valuable mentorship from respected practitioners in the field. He has further strengthened his expertise through completing postgraduate studies in urban planning and design to complement his architectural studies and registration as a Landscape Architect with the Australian Institute of Landscape Architects.

Throughout his career, Jack has developed a diverse portfolio spanning master planning, education, residential and commercial projects, open space and recreation design, public domain and streetscape works, infrastructure, wayfinding, and visual consultancy.

Since returning to SHAC, Jack has been instrumental in expanding the practice’s landscape and urban design offering to clients. He champions a Country-centred approach that embeds First Nations perspectives, recognises ecological systems knowledge, and prioritises responsive landscape design outcomes to enhance urban environments and foster meaningful engagement with Place.

As Associate Director, Jack is committed to continue strengthening the integration of landscape at SHAC, ensuring holistic project outcomes that respond to both built and natural systems. Jack looks forward to growing SHAC’s landscape and urban design portfolio across regional and metropolitan communities, continuing to deliver collaborative, pragmatic, and enduring design solutions that shape resilient communities.

SHAC is excited to announce the appointment of Corenne Earl to Associate Director.

Already an experienced graphic designer with over 15 years professional experience, Corenne began her architectural and interior design career over a decade ago as an award-winning student with SHAC. Corenne expanded her expertise through a diverse portfolio of projects spanning residential, large-scale education, health, hospitality, and commercial sectors projects from concept through to construction.

An exceptionally versatile and dedicated Graphic, Interior, and Architectural designer, Corenne brings a rare multi-discipline approach and capability to her work. Her expertise ranges from graphics, signage / wayfinding, and commercial interior fit outs to delivering complex $10million hospitality projects. With a deeply hands-on approach, she applies careful attention to client centred solutions, creative innovation, and strategic problem-solving to realise exceptional design outcomes.

As an Associate, Corenne is committed to advancing SHAC’s multidisciplinary and collaborative design culture, while upholding operational excellence. She is equally passionate about fostering strong team development and nurturing emerging talent within the practice.
