This week we had a very special visitor!

Our old educator, Megan popped in for a visit! We were all so excited to tell her what we have been up to and how much we miss her! She shared a special story for us and told us about all her latest adventures!

Last week, the 'Wilai' children have been have exploring their sense of touch by engaging in some finger painting. Some children were a bit hesitant at first but came to love the touch of the paint and being able to create a picture with their finger tips.

What a busy week we had in the 'Mowane Room'! We had so much learning and exciting things we wanted to do and share with you!

Monday 22 April was Earth Day, but due to being a public holiday we celebrated it a day late here in the 'Mowane Room'. We investigated what Earth Day is all about, from learning about our planet to looking further into how we can look after it!

On Wednesday we had a look at ANZAC Day. During our group time we focused on the different forces that protect our country - the Army, Air Force and Navy. We even looked at the special service dogs who help out! We also looked at the flower that represents this--the Red Poppy--and even attempted to make our own Poppy and were so excited to show our, mummies and daddies.

FRIYAY! What a fun day we had today exploring our natural environment for International Nature Play Day! We spent our morning outside in the beautiful sun, experimenting with water, mud and dirt. We even enjoyed a nice picnic lunch outside.

A very busy few weeks in the 'Mowane Room' and we love sharing it with you, as we are so proud of the learning we are engaged in.

Please let us know what you think of our experiences, as we love to hear your feedback and use it to guide and create our program.

Over the past 2 weeks, the children of Mowane have explored the plants that we planted in our yard and begun learning their properties.

We first started by planting beans, tomatoes, snow peas and cucumbers during our group time and each day since we have been so excited to see them grow. We have used rulers to measure height, as well as using our counting skills to count the numbers of leaves. To ensure they continue to grow we love watering them as well as being gentle and careful when we are around them. We are so excited to get our first vegetables.

Come and take a look!

Recently, the 'Maiyaa' children have been eager to share their experiences from home during group time. This is an excellent way to extend on the children’s talking and listening skills while allowing them to build connections with their peers.

Over the last two weeks, the 'Yunung' children have been showing a big interest in playing doctors. The children have all been taking turns being the doctor as they care for their peers using a variety of doctor's tools. Today we investigated this further as we used the iPad to look up what each doctor tool is used for.

Harmony Day... A day to celebrate diversity and bring people together! Today in the 'Mowane Room' we learnt all about Harmony Day and what we can do to celebrate diversity and equality at St Nick's. We watched a video to dive deeper into the meaning of Harmony Day, read a story called 'Peace' and discussed what it was about, and even wore the colour that represents this special day… ORANGE!

Yesterday was the culmination of our Feel Good February experiences with an excursion to the Diocese offices next door. The 'Yunung' and 'Maiyaa' children excitedly engaged with our extended St Nick’s community by handing out hand print flowers and a bespoke artwork to the ladies in head office. The staff loved the visit and reception even requested an artwork for their wall too! On our way back, we saw Bec from the café who invited us to visit the kitchen on our next excursion.

Today the 'Maiyaa' and 'Yunung' rooms celebrated Australia Day by engaging in a range of Australia-inspired learning experiences.

We started the day by paying respect to the first Australians with our acknowledgement of country, before exploring our artistic side as we painted with natural materials and created clay echidna sculptures.

We got our groove on by participating in some interpretive animal dancing while listening to traditional digeridoo music, and even had a special lamington treat with our morning tea.

Our story time consisted of books that celebrate Australia’s multicultural heritage such as ‘I’m Australian Too’ by Mem Fox, ‘Ernie Dances to the Digeridoo’ by Alison Lester and ‘Why I Love Australia’ written from the voices of Australian children.

Sensory madness!

Over the past three weeks, sensory play in the 'Mowane Room' has been a hit! From messy finger painting, to creating slime and goo, to experimenting with water in our outdoor environment.

As stated in our 'Mowane Room' philosophy, “We will strive to create a learning environment that encourages exploration, engagement and investigation so that all children become confident and involved learners.”
