Every school is different. So, what does it look like to make Quality Teaching Rounds (QTR) work in your own context?

At Para Hills High School, a commitment to strengthening teaching practice was already well established. QTR gave the school a structure and shared language to build on that foundation.

But implementing QTR wasn’t without its challenges.

When relief teacher shortages made it difficult to run Rounds as planned, the school found a way to adapt the process to work within its staffing context, while maintaining the rigour at the heart of QTR.

Today, every permanent teacher at Para Hills High has participated in QTR, and the school is using the approach to support induction, strengthen professional conversations and create opportunities for teachers to learn across subject areas.

Today’s NAPLAN headlines have once again sparked concerns about declining literacy results. But what if we’re asking the wrong questions?

Earlier this year, Distinguished Laureate Professor Jenny Gore AM wrote this piece for the Canberra Times, arguing that, while NAPLAN is a valuable diagnostic tool, it has become a far higher-stakes measure than originally intended.

The real challenge isn’t simply lifting test scores. It’s ensuring every student has access to high-quality teaching and addressing the structural inequities that continue to shape educational outcomes.

As Jenny writes, “Raising NAPLAN scores won’t achieve these aims.”

In a world shaped by AI, climate change, and global instability, we need an education system that focuses on creating not only capable learners, but intelligent, creative, empathetic young people.

Congratulations to Singleton High School on becoming an official QT Academy Partner! 👏

This recognition celebrates the school's long-term commitment to improving teaching and learning through Quality Teaching Rounds and acknowledges the lasting impact this work has had on teachers, students and the wider school community.

The milestone was celebrated at a school assembly attended by almost 1,000 students and 100 staff, where Federal Member for Hunter Dan Repacholi MP and QT Academy Executive Director Steve Hannan officially presented the recognition.

Singleton High is the 10th school nationally, and just the second in the Hunter, to achieve QT Academy Partner status.

We're proud to celebrate this partnership and the school's ongoing commitment to quality teaching.

Teacher shortages, declining enrolments and fewer subject choices are creating a cycle that is limiting opportunities for students in rural, remote and disadvantaged communities.

Research from the University of Newcastle’s Teachers and Teaching Research Centre shows that while young people’s aspirations for university remain strong, the pathways to get there can become increasingly difficult to access.

So, how do we ensure every student has the same opportunities, regardless of where they live or go to school?
