✨ The wait is over... it's time for the big reveal! ✨
Over the past 10 weeks, 16 Alesco students from our Raymond Terrace and Woodberry campuses have transformed a blank wall into something truly meaningful through the BRICC Program with UP & Up.
More than just a mural, this project gave our students the chance to build confidence, learn new creative skills, form genuine connections, and leave a lasting mark on their community.
This project is a wonderful example of what happens when a community comes together around its young people.
A huge thank you to UP&UP for leading this inspiring program and to Australian Government Department of Social Services for making it possible through their funding. Thank you also to jupiter Australia for the shoulder-to-shoulder conversations that supported our students along the way, Port Stephens Family and Neighbourhood Services The Deck for providing a welcoming space, and to Port Stephens Council and Hunter Water for their partnership and support.

When we partnered with Aldi's Food Rescue Program, we hoped to reduce food waste and support our students. We never imagined the ripple effect it would have across our entire community. 💙
Each week, our Tuncurry campus receives fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, bread and pantry staples that might otherwise go to waste. Our students are learning to prepare healthy meals, build confidence in the kitchen, understand nutrition, and see the importance of sustainability through real-life experiences.
The impact extends well beyond our campus. Together, we've shared fresh produce with Homebase Services, our work experience partner Pebbly Beach Childcare, and the local Women's Shelter. 🍅
One of the most touching moments came when the Women's Shelter gifted our students packs of period underwear in return. No money changed hands, just generosity, kindness and people supporting one another.
What began as food rescue has become so much more. It is students learning the value of giving back, communities caring for one another, and a powerful reminder that one act of generosity can create a ripple effect far beyond where it began. ✨

Recently, our Woodberry Hospitality students had the opportunity to visit Full Throttle Café & BBQ and for an exclusive behind-the-scenes industry experience. 🍗
Students toured a fully functioning bakery, explored a commercial kitchen in operation, and gained valuable insight into the skills and dedication required to become a professional in the BBQ industry. Students were also able to practice hospitality service skills relevant to their Mocktails unit.
Throughout the day, Full Throttle Group owner Mick spoke of his inspiring story, and the students also benefitted from industry knowledge shared by General Manager Will and Head Chef Wayne. 👨🍳
This excursion was an inspiring and educational experience, and an opportunity to strengthen community connections between Alesco and the Full Throttle Group.
This partnership has already supported students in gaining employment opportunities and has opened doors for future work placements and industry experience.

If a young person is struggling to engage with traditional rows of desks and endless textbook copying, it is often because they learn best by doing.
At Alesco Secondary College, our programs are packed with practical, hands-on electives and project-based learning. From creative arts and design to practical life skills, we give students the chance to explore tangible projects that build real-world confidence.
How hands-on learning changes the game:
👐 Immediate engagement: Creating something physical provides instant feedback and a sense of accomplishment that a worksheet just can't match.
👐 Building practical competence: Students develop problem-solving skills, spatial awareness, and fine motor skills that translate directly into future trades or creative industries.
👐 Gently expanding potential: Trying new, low-pressure creative outlets helps students build resilience when a project doesn't go perfectly the first time.

For many families the anxiety of hours of homework can turn evenings into a battlefield of stress.
We do things differently by not sending homework home.
We believe that when the school day ends, young people need time to rest, connect with family, pursue their passions, and just be teenagers.
When a student knows they can truly switch off at the end of the day, they return to school the next morning with more energy, less burnout, and a greater readiness to learn.

A traditional classroom often focuses solely on individual desks and silent work. But in the real world, success is driven by collaboration, active listening, and problem-solving with others 🤝🌱
We structure our days around interactive, team-based projects that build essential interpersonal skills. True to our name: the Latin word for growth and maturity, we challenge our students to work together, share ideas, and navigate different perspectives in a supportive space.
By teaching young people how to collaborate effectively, we are ensuring they graduate as capable, confident individuals ready to step into the workforce or further training.
