Novoschool

We welcomed local archaeologist Crystal Phillips from Heritage Now to Novoschool, gaining a fascinating insight into a career dedicated to uncovering history and preserving culture.

Through stories from archaeological digs across the Newcastle region and beyond, students discovered how artefacts can reveal the lives, traditions and experiences of people who came before us.

The session sparked lots of curiosity, questions and a deeper appreciation for the stories hidden beneath our feet. Thank you to Crystal for sharing her expertise, experiences and passion for her field.

Several Stage 5 students attended the Youth Climate Leadership Forum at the University of Newcastle, joining other young people from across the region to explore climate challenges and possible solutions.

Through workshops, discussions and a future-focused expo, we explored how individuals, communities and industries can respond to environmental issues and shape a more sustainable future.

Students also had the opportunity to engage with university academics to explore pathways into emerging industries and degrees connected to the solutions-focused economy.

When people think about learning, they often think about lessons. But some of the best learning happens when students choose to keep exploring an idea, solving a problem or asking another question.

Marine biologist and author Anita Thomas recently visited Novoschool, sharing her passion for ocean science and the work being done to understand and protect marine environments.

We learned about ocean ecosystems, current environmental challenges and the role data plays in understanding the health of marine environments. Students also explored citizen science, discovering how everyday observations can contribute to real scientific research and environmental conservation.

Stage 5 recently worked alongside educators from the University of Sydney to investigate one of the world's most important resources: water.

Across two days, we explored water quality through chemistry, microscopy and data analysis. Students designed and tested their own filtration systems, analysed pollutants, investigated microplastics and used techniques such as titration to better understand the science behind water treatment.

21 students travelled to the Regional Round of the World Scholars Cup, an international academic competition that combines debating, collaborative writing, quizzes, and team challenges with a great deal of of fun.

Our students embraced the challenge with teamwork, curiosity and enthusiasm, with two teams finishing in the Top 10 overall. We're proud of all 21 scholars for stepping outside of their comfort zones and engaging with global issues.

Years 9 and 10 visited the Burwood Beach Wastewater Treatment Works with Hunter Water, getting a behind-the-scenes look at what happens after water disappears down the drain.

We explored the journey of wastewater through the treatment process and learned about the infrastructure, technology and science involved in protecting both public health and the local environment.

Our Year 7 team travelled to Sydney yesterday to compete in the national final of the Kids’ Lit Quiz at the State Library of NSW, going head-to-head with top teams from across Australia.

They placed equal 6th out of 16 teams, with only three points separating them from first place in an incredibly close competition. A fantastic effort, well done Luka, Archer, Antigone and Kiana!
