The goals of Novoschool are:

1.

To provide a progressive and boutique approach for Year 7-12 learners in the Newcastle area
2. By using alternative frameworks, while still complying with NESA requirements, multidisciplinary approaches and portfolio demonstrations of learning, will provide an engaging environment for learners
3. A high priority on experiential learning will have learners undertake real world learning outside of the classroom on a frequent basis. This will include regular excursions and internships
4. Personalised Learning Plans, along with low teacher-student ratios (1:20), will allow for greater engagement and efficiency of learning for young people

Novoschool will assist each learner to discover who they are, where they want to go, and how they can contribute to their community and the wider world

What does the future of energy look like?

Stage 5 visited the CSIRO Energy Centre in Newcastle, taking their exploration of SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure into the field.

We met with researchers working across carbon capture, solar energy, energy storage and the energy transition, toured laboratories and the Renewable Energy Integration Facility. It was a chance to see science, engineering and innovation in action, and hear directly from the people working on some of the challenges that will shape our future.

Year 8 students visited Rainbird Farm at Bobs Farm, a small-scale market garden growing seasonal produce for the local community.

We explored how the farm builds healthy soil, manages pests and weeds naturally, grows and harvests seasonal crops, and takes produce from seed to sale. We also learned how direct farm sales and seasonal subscriptions can create a shorter, more resilient food chain, connecting what we’ve been learning about food production and food security with a working local example.

We recently welcomed author Scott Bevan to Novoschool, as year 9 & 10 students are currently reading his book 'Newcastle: The Lives and Times of a City'.

Scott shared stories and insights from his research, giving students the chance to ask questions and explore the history of the city they live and learn in. What an opportunity to take our learning beyond the pages and into conversation with the author himself! Thanks Scott.

A huge congratulations to PDHPE teacher Taylah, who recently completed her first marathon after months of training and preparation.

We talk a lot at Novoschool about challenging yourself, setting goals and discovering what you’re capable of. It’s pretty great when the people teaching those lessons are living them too.

Where will our water come from in the future?

As Stage 5 explores SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, we welcomed Senior Process Engineer Brendan Dagg to Novoschool to share the engineering behind the new Belmont Desalination Plant.

Students explored how desalination works, the technology involved in turning seawater into drinking water, and how new infrastructure is being designed to strengthen water security in our region.

Earlier this month, 32 students and five teachers headed into outback South Australia for a camel-supported trek along the Birdsville Track.

Walking 14–20 kilometres each day, students led the camels, set up and packed down camp, prepared food, managed their gear and worked together through the heat, dust and plenty of flies.

Taking on challenges like this builds independence, responsibility and the confidence that comes when students discover they can do hard things. Thanks to for such a memorable trip.

What actually happens to our food when we throw it away?

As Year 7 continues to investigate our food systems, Katie from Summerhill Waste Management Centre joined us to explore what happens at the other end - when food becomes waste.

We learned about the reality of food waste in landfill, the challenges it creates, and upcoming changes to Newcastle’s waste management system. It was a valuable local perspective on a global issue, encouraging us to think more carefully about food waste, resource use and the systems that manage what we throw away.

Over the weekend, Astrid was one of only two junior athletes to take part in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu seminar led by 8th Degree coral belt Carlos Machado, alongside former UFC fighter and 5th Degree black belt Anthony Perosh.

At the end of the seminar, Astrid was presented with her yellow and black belt in front of some of Newcastle’s leading BJJ practitioners, recognising more than four years of dedicated training and competition.

A huge achievement Astrid. Congratulations!

Expo is this Thursday!

Join us from 5:00 - 6:30pm at Novoschool as students open up their learning and share what they’ve been exploring, solving, questioning and creating throughout the term.

Expo puts students at the centre of the conversation, giving them responsibility for explaining their work, answering questions and sharing the thinking behind it.

Families, friends and our wider community are welcome. We’d love to see you there!

What role can small-scale farming play in a more sustainable food system?

Year 7 visited Purple Pear Farm as part of their exploration of SDG 2: Zero Hunger, learning about permaculture, biodynamics and the sustainable farming practices behind the principles of Earth Care, People Care, Fair Share.

We also explored Community Supported Agriculture and considered how local, small-scale farming can contribute to food security and more sustainable food systems.
