Year HCHS Horizons Adventure students had a three-day camp on Maria Island this week. In the lead-up to the camp, students co-created an itinerary, packing list and self-catered menu. They learnt about first contact between indigenous people and European explorers, the Island’s rich colonial history and its amazing geology. On Island they visited Painted Cliffs, slept in the old penitentiary, rode mountain bikes to French’s Farm and visited Fossil Cliffs and the old cement works. On the second night students ventured up to the cemetery and experienced an eerie ghost story. They saw lots of friendly wombats and some overzealous Cape Barren Geese. Many students are inspired to go back and spend more time on the Island.

Big Picture students worked hard for two days planting over 300 trees on a farm near Tunbridge. These plantings will provide habitats for endangered native Australian animals and shelter to farm animals benefiting both wildlife and farmers.

The training provides students with an important qualification and a valuable first step towards employment and further opportunities in the construction industry.
A big thank you to Keystone for funding the training and helping provide our students with these valuable industry skills and opportunities.
Well done to all 12 students!

Today, we had four HCHS teams take on the Maths Relay, with two Year 7/8 teams and two Year 9/10 teams competing against schools from across the south of the state.
A fantastic opportunity for our students to work collaboratively, problem-solve under pressure and put their mathematical skills to the test!
Congratulations to all four teams for their effort, teamwork and determination.
A special congratulations to our Year 9/10 HCHS B team, who finished an outstanding 🥉 THIRD PLACE!

What a fantastic week it has been celebrating the joy of reading at Hobart City High School!
From our Book Week Bingo challenge and the Library's Soundtrack Your Scene competition, to welcoming a Prep class from New Town Primary School for a special reading of The Idea Jar, students have been exploring stories in creative and inspiring ways.
Today's Book Week Parades at both campuses were a wonderful highlight. We were amazed by the creativity, effort and thought that students and staff put into their costumes. From favourite characters to meaningful literary connections, every costume told a story.
Thank you to everyone who participated, supported events, shared their love of reading, and helped make Book Week such a memorable celebration. Here's to the power of stories to inspire, connect and spark imagination.

Our Year 9 and 10 students recently attended the Careers in Emergency Services excursion, facilitated by Beacon Foundation.
Students heard from Tas Police, Ambulance Tasmania, Tasmanian Fire Service, and the SES through a Q&A panel, hands-on speed careering activities and site tours.
A fantastic opportunity for students to explore different careers, ask questions and gain an insight into what it’s really like to work in emergency services.
Thank you to the Beacon Foundation and all of the emergency services personnel who gave their time to engage with our students.

Grade 9/10 Big Picture Students were involved in a 3 day Foodies program where they spent a day in the kitchen cooking and learning how to cut, debone and use a whole chicken for various meals. They went to visit Pigeon Hole Bakery to see behind the scenes production, Longley Organic Farm and lunch at Hamlet Café. Students spent the next day cooking lunch using local produce and serving this out of the food truck. This was an exciting and valuable experience.
