Year HCHS Horizons Adventure students had a three-day camp on Maria Island this week. In the lead-up to the camp, students co-created an itinerary, packing list and self-catered menu. They learnt about first contact between indigenous people and European explorers, the Island’s rich colonial history and its amazing geology. On Island they visited Painted Cliffs, slept in the old penitentiary, rode mountain bikes to French’s Farm and visited Fossil Cliffs and the old cement works. On the second night students ventured up to the cemetery and experienced an eerie ghost story. They saw lots of friendly wombats and some overzealous Cape Barren Geese. Many students are inspired to go back and spend more time on the Island.
