Look what's been happening in 1/2 Young!
In 1/2 Young, students have been developing their reading skills. During our reading sessions, we have been practising key skills that help children become confident and capable readers.
A big focus has been on reading with expression. Students are learning to bring stories to life by using their voices to match punctuation and meaning. From excited exclamations to calm narration, it’s wonderful to hear their growing understanding of how expression enhances comprehension.
We are also working on maintaining a steady and appropriate pace. Students are encouraged to read smoothly so that they can better understand and enjoy the text.
In addition, we are strengthening accuracy and fluency. Through guided reading and repeated practice, students are learning to recognise words more easily and read sentences with fewer pauses. As their fluency improves, so does their ability to understand what they are reading.

Three-day and two-night camp
The Variety Motor Mouth Camp is a three-day and two-night camp that has been created to assist children who have complex communication needs and use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) aids to express themselves.
First held in Hobart in 2022, the camp is designed to support children who use these communication systems and their families to attend together.
AAC is used during all activities at camp, encouraging the child and their family to fully embrace their AAC system and to incorporate it into their everyday life.
Nominations are now open for young AAC users and their families to attend and interested people to volunteer at the event.
