We are so lucky to offer our students opportunities like this. Real experiences in our local community help students explore future pathways and build valuable skills. Thanks to the Derwent Valley Railway and SWN for providing the opportunity.

This afternoon I visited the Derwent Valley Railway (DVR) to meet the second group of young people taking part in the Skills Pathway program being delivered by the Southcentral Workforce Network (SWN) in partnership with the Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society.

Over the next six weeks, ten Year 9 and 10 students from New Norfolk High School will work alongside DVR mentors and people from industry, gaining practical skills and knowledge while starting to think about career pathways and opportunities.

It was great to meet the students and hear a little about what they’ll be doing over the coming weeks.

Programs like this give young people a chance to learn outside the classroom, try something different, work alongside people with real industry experience and get a better idea of where their own skills and interests might take them.

A big thank you to the Derwent Valley Railway Preservation Society, Southcentral Workforce Network, Area Connect Tasmania, Department for Education, Children and Young People, Boyer Paper Mill, Liverpool Engineering Works, Hazell Bros Group and TasTAFE, along with the parents, guardians and everyone else helping make this opportunity possible.

It’s wonderful to see this happening right here in the Derwent Valley and creating opportunities for our young people 🚂

What happens when you pair research scientists with high school art students? This year, 6 of our grade 10 students took on this challenge to create new, inspiring ways to communicate these scientific ideas.

Additionally, ex-student Bree also took part in this year's Beaker Street Festival by becoming a supporting artist. Inspired by her own CoLab piece from last year, she led other students from around the state in making their own metallic krill.

Head along to the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery to dive into and read about their projects - it is on until Sunday the 6th of September!

In response to student voice, a collaborative decision has been made to shift our Grade 10 Celebration venue from the Elwick Function Centre to the Glenorchy Football Ground function rooms.

This change, based on student feedback around cost and location, requires a change of date to Wednesday 16 December.

To align with this, the year 10 Activities Day is now on Monday 14 December and our final assembly on Tuesday 15 December.

More information will be emailed to all Grade 10 parents, and Home Group teachers will be calling home, but please contact the school if you have any further questions.
