The step to Blue Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is one of the hardest steps because you officially "stop being a beginner." It is even harder if you are a teenager because Blue Belt is an adult belt. This means that you not only need the skills, but you need the maturity, the mentality and the grit to be able to hang with adults.

Samson Melody has been with us here in at Derwent Valley Martial Arts since he was 14 and has grown to be a leader and a fine example of a martial artist.

We couldn't be prouder of him and his work.

Between and Fabio, Derwent Valley Martial Arts has two of the most experienced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu coaches in Tasmania.

Derwent Valley Martial Arts opened its doors in April 2022, offering classes in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and Muay Thai in New Norfolk. In the last 20 months since opening, we have built a strong community of students and coaches. We have had highs and lows and have had some great experiences. We have had students compete accross Tasmania in Muay Thai, Jiu Jitsu and Combat Jiu Jitsu. Yesterday, Derwent Valley Martial Arts reached a milestone, with our student Michael Gravenall, becoming our first "Valley-grown" Blue Belt (the first rank to be reached after white belt and a very significant step), after a gruelling 1 hour physical test at our sister academy

Derwent Valley Martial Arts is a community and family, so we are all extremely proud of Michael.
