What better day to bang the drum for teaching children about emotions through play than International Play Day
Play is children’s natural language. Research shows that playful learning creates stronger more memorable connections because children are actively engaged, emotionally invested, and learning through experience rather than simply being told information.
That’s why children using The Tedology Bear Kit look like they are “simply playing” they often don’t realise they’re learning emotional skills at all. They’re playing, imagining, talking, drawing, moving and breathing. Yet at the same time they’re building emotional literacy, emotional regulation, self-awareness, and confidence.

This morning I was interviewed by 2GB Sydney about how we can enhance the teddy bear to make it 'smart', grounded in science, comforting, safe, and supportive of children's emotional health without using AI.

How families are using Tedology in hospitals and for medical appointments….
Recently I visited Perth Children’s Hospital, Starlight, and Kiind.
It was inspiring and touching, as always.
Tedology was designed to help support children through emotions in moments like these. It’s an honour that families send me photos of the help and confidence this little Tedology Bear and Wellbeing Kit provide before, during, and after hospital visits and operations.
Its bravery and confidence activities can help children prepare for hospital stays.
Its multisensory features provide comfort and support in the moment.
Its feelings cards and activities help children talk about and make sense of their experiences afterwards.
It’s a bundle of support for little minds and bodies, disguised as a teddy bear.

“How do I know if this behaviour is their Trauma, ADHD, Autism or Anxiety?”
I hear professionals getting asked this all the time. But often what people are really asking is....how can I help. So the more important question is often:
“What does this child need?” 💛
When we understand children through neuroscience, connection, attachment and emotional safety, we often respond in ways that help all children thrive. Whole School Trauma Informed and Well-being Approaches are a must in today’s schooling system.

Big emotions can feel overwhelming for young children, which is why emotional literacy and wellbeing are becoming an increasingly important focus across early childhood education and care.
The SMART TEDDY program is helping preschoolers build emotional awareness, resilience and self-regulation skills through play, storytelling and supported conversations about feelings.
As the sector continues to strengthen its focus on children’s mental health, wellbeing and trauma-informed practice, programs like this are drawing growing interest from educators and families alike.

For some children, school may be the only place where they experience themselves as worthy, capable, and others as safe.
Trauma-informed practice is not about lowering expectations or “doing more.”
It is about understanding children through the lens of neuroscience, relationships, safety, and emotional development, creating environments that support regulation, connection, and learning for everyone.
At its heart, it is a “do no harm” approach. 💛
In this carousel, Dr Louise Mansell explores why trauma-informed environments matter for all children and staff, not just the most vulnerable. Listen to the podcast for more.
