What a fantastic day our Year 3 students had at Healesville Sanctuary last Friday!
The excitement started before we even arrived, with students playing ‘Healesville Spot It’ on the bus trip there (and again on the way home!).
One of the highlights was definitely the bird show. Our students loved watching the incredible birds in action, while some of our teachers were a little less sure when the birds came swooping just above their heads! 🦅
Students also took part in a hands-on workshop where they learnt about the life cycles, features and habitats of different animals. They explored how we can tell the age of trees, investigated tree hollows and discovered why these are so important as homes for Australian animals.
Students also explored how to determine if an animal was a prey or a predator based on where their eyes sit in the skull, learning ‘eyes to the front, born to hunt’ and ‘eyes to the side, born to hide’ mottos to remember this!
There was also plenty of time to explore the sanctuary! We spotted koalas, echidnas, reptiles, platypuses, swans, nocturnal animals in the Animals of the Night exhibit and many more native animals.
It was a wonderful way to bring our classroom learning to life. Our students connected what they saw to our Inquiry learning about vegetation and animal habitats, as well as our Information Report writing about animals, their features, habitats and life cycles.
There were lots of excited conversations, new discoveries and some very tired faces on the bus ride home! A big day, but such a fun one for our Year 3s. 💚
