Karuna Montessori School closely follows the Montessori philosophy with AMI (Association Montessori International) trained Montessori teaching staff. It is registered and accredited with the NSW Dept Education Board of Studies as a school catering for children in Kindergarten, and is licensed by the Department of Community Services (DoCS). The school is administered by a Parent Council which is el

ected each year at an Annual General Meeting. The Council holds parent meetings twice a term. The school caters for 30 children, aged between three and six years, and has four staff members. The school hours are as follows:

Morning: 8.45am to 12.00pm 5 days a week
Extended Day: 8.45am to 2.45pm 5 days a week
Afternoon Care: 12.00pm-2.45pm 4 days a week

Karuna Montessori works with Little Hands Montessori to provide an Under 3's program, which allows a parent the opportunity to attend with their child for up to 3 hours once or twice per week in an environment especially set up to facilitate the child’s growing need for independence, order, movement and language. The sessions are led by a 0 - 3 experienced Montessori Assistant. For more information visit www.littlehandsatwork.com.au

Karuna is a child-centred community. Observers often comment on the special atmosphere of calmness and purposeful work that is evident in the classroom and on how happy and contented the children are. The classroom is designed specifically to suit the needs and interests of the children. Children from three to six years share the same classroom and have the same three teachers during their entire time at the school. The mixed age group allows the children to learn from each other, and because of each other. The younger children are inspired to do further activities by observing the older ones, and the older children reinforce their own knowledge by sharing it with the younger ones. Children become functioning members of their own community. They are treated with respect and dignity and learn to treat others in the same way. The role of the teachers is to observe and facilitate rather than teach in the conventional sense. Children are introduced to new materials at an appropriate stage for their own individual development. They are free to choose their work from any of the materials which they have been shown. They may work for as long as the exercise holds their interest, free from interruption, competition or correction. Many materials are self-correcting, allowing children to solve problems by themselves. Children often choose to repeat exercises over and over until they are quite satisfied that they have mastered them. Children may work on their own or with friends and there are also group activities such as story-telling, music and movement, and periods of unstructured play in the garden. The Montessori classroom is created to enable children to learn through their own manipulation of materials. There are five main areas in the Montessori pre-school environment:
- Practical Life - the skills of daily living
- Sensorial - exploring the world
- Language - from spoken to written
- Mathematics - from concrete to abstract
- Culture - integrated into life (natural science, geography, history, art and music)

More information can be found at http://karunamontessorischool.org.au/learning/the-five-areas-of-learning.html. The children explore all these areas at their own pace, guided by the Directress. Within each area the materials follow a specific progression. The concepts become progressively more complex, requiring more concentration and a longer attention span.

🌏 Exploring Asia in Term 3

This term, the children are journeying through the continent of Asia — beginning with China. 🇨🇳

Our learning spaces have been filled with books, maps, flags, cultural artefacts and hands-on activities inviting the children to explore Asian countries, animals, landmarks and traditions.

The learning is already coming to life through the children’s own work — from maps and Mount Everest projects to art and cooking experiences, including making sushi. 🗺️🥢

Alongside our exploration of Asia, the children are discovering Pablo Picasso and Cubism, experimenting with his distinctive style through their own artwork. 🎨

So much to discover, create and explore this term.

A glimpse inside our Montessori classroom 🌿 🧱 ✏️

From building towers and exploring dimension, to practising handwriting, geometry and constructing with blocks, the children have been busy learning through hands-on discovery.

Each activity invites them to work at their own pace, concentrate deeply, problem-solve and build independence — with educators there to guide when needed.

And just as importantly, there are plenty of opportunities to observe, learn from and help one another.

These everyday moments are Montessori in action: curious minds, capable hands and a growing confidence to learn independently.

A special visit from Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden 🌿 💛 🦎

The children enjoyed a hands-on experience exploring native plants and wildlife, including meeting a bearded dragon!

A wonderful opportunity to learn through touch, observation and curiosity, deepening their connection to nature.

Montessori learning in action 🌱✨

The children are playing Knock Knock with the Sandpaper Letters 🔤 - a fun way to practise recognising letters and the sounds they make.

What made this activity particularly special was seeing one of our Kindergarten students take the lead - guiding the small group, practising sounds together and helping younger peers along the way.

A lovely example of our mixed-age Montessori environment at work, where children learn from and support one another while building confidence, independence and leadership. 🤍
