Our Gumnuts had so much fun exploring our new vet experience! 🐾🩺 They each chose an animal to care for and loved taking on the role of a veterinarian. The children enjoyed gently wrapping their animals, checking their temperatures, giving them their shots and making sure they were feeling happy and well.

This experience encouraged our Gumnuts to explore the importance of caring for others while developing their nurturing and compassionate nature. It was wonderful to see the children showing such kindness, patience and love towards their animals as they worked together and cared for their little patients. ❤️

🖤💛❤️ Exploring Emotions Through Puppet Play & Aboriginal Perspectives ❤️💛🖤

Today during group time, the children enjoyed an engaging puppet show exploring emotions, communication and self-expression. Using puppets featuring Australian native animals the children explored how different characters can experience and communicate their feelings.

The children then used their own animal puppets to create their own stories and puppet shows, sharing how they felt through imaginative play. This provided an opportunity to respectfully incorporate Aboriginal perspectives by connecting with Australian native animals and our relationship with Country and the natural environment.

Today, the Koalas went on a Colour Monster excursion to encourage creativity and the use of natural materials when making a house for our Colour Monsters. It was beautiful weather for the Koalas to walk down to the reserve and enjoy being outdoors for group time. While exploring, the children had lots of fun hunting for the hidden Colour Monsters and adding them to our house, along with beautiful natural materials such as flowers, leaves and sticks. 🌿🌸🍃 With the rain from the previous day leaving behind some lovely muddy patches, the children also enjoyed getting creative and making their own drawings in the mud! 🐾🎨

With some time left before heading back to school, we decided to walk a little further down the reserve for some active play. The Koalas enjoyed participating in running races and cheering each other on, followed by a fun game of Duck, Duck, Goose! It was a wonderful morning filled with nature, creativity, movement, exploration and lots of smiles. 🐨💛

Today during our School Readiness excursion, we continued to extend on our ongoing birdhouse project. As we arrived at the reserve, the children were excited to discover a large flock of cockatoos perched in the trees and foraging for food on the ground. They eagerly stopped to observe the birds, listening carefully to their calls and noticing how they moved through the trees. This unexpected encounter sparked many conversations as the children shared their own experiences of seeing different birds at home and around the community.
To build on the children’s interest, we gathered together to read Birds Around the Billabong. The story introduced the children to a variety of Australian birds and encouraged them to think about the unique features, habitats and behaviours of each species. As we read, the children enthusiastically pointed out birds they recognised and compared them to the cockatoos they had just observed. After the story, the children spent some time quietly watching the cockatoos, practising their observation skills and discussing what they noticed.
Using canvases, the children were then invited to express their ideas by drawing the birds they believed might visit our birdhouse. Their suggestions included rainbow lorikeets, cockatoos, pigeons and crows. Each child’s artwork reflected their own imagination, creativity and understanding of the local environment. They confidently explained their drawings, sharing why they thought certain birds would enjoy visiting the birdhouse. This experience encouraged creative thinking, communication and strengthened their connection to nature.
To finish our excursion, we continued exploring the reserve and stumbled upon a mysterious hidden garden. The children were instantly intrigued and eagerly wandered through the space, asking thoughtful questions and making predictions about who or what might live there. This exciting discovery inspired curiosity, imaginative thinking and a sense of adventure as the children explored their natural surroundings together, fostering a deeper appreciation for the environment through hands-on learning.

✨ Exploring Emotions Through Play ✨

As part of our August focus on emotions, the children enjoyed group time reading The Colour Monster.

We explored feelings like happiness, sadness, calm, anger, fear and love, encouraging each child to recognise and share their own emotions.

To extend this learning, the children created their own sensory jars using colour, water, oil and glitter.
Watching the colours swirl and separate sparked curiosity, creativity and early scientific thinking.

Learning about feelings can be beautiful, messy and full of wonder.

An invitation to explore…

Today our Possums discovered the beauty of colour through nature. Using flowers, leaves and a mirrored surface, the children explored painting with their hands, toes and brushes, creating beautiful marks inspired by the natural world around them.

The mirror invited moments of curiosity as the children observed their reflections alongside the colours, textures and patterns they created. Every child explored in their own unique way, reminding us that the process of discovery is just as meaningful as the finished artwork.
