A Montessori family day care registered with Building Futures Care. Kerrie is a mum of three and a proud grandmother of two.

At Monte Kids, we provide a nurturing, Montessori-inspired environment for children aged 0–5 years. Our philosophy is grounded in encouraging independence, fostering a deep love of learning, and honouring each child’s unique developmental journey. As Maria Montessori reminds us, “The child is both a hope and a promise for mankind.”

For nearly five years, we have followed the five key areas of Mon

tessori education—Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language, and Culture—with rich extensions including art, music, movement, and hands-on learning that supports both fine and gross motor development. Kerrie is a dedicated and qualified educator with a Cert III in Early Childhood Education and Care. Her Montessori training includes Montessori diplomas in Infant/Toddler (0–3) and Early Childhood (3–6) through NAMC, and she is currently completing a Cert III in Montessori Early Childhood Education with MECTA. She is trained in First Aid, CPR, food safety, fire prevention, safe sleep, child protection, and holds a Blue Card. Before entering early childhood education, Kerrie worked as a court reporter and live captioner for the Deaf and hard of hearing. She also plays the piano and flute and brings her love of music into the learning environment. Our outdoor environment allows children to explore nature through gardening, composting, sand play, mud kitchen fun, play equipment, and plenty of grass for running and games. Children help care for our fish, birds, and guinea pigs, supporting responsibility and empathy. Indoors, they enjoy cooking, art, music, and woodwork, with a separate sleep area that supports individual rest needs. With small 1:4 ratios, children receive meaningful guidance and connection. Practical life lies at the heart of our program—helping children build independence in self-care, care of the environment, grace and courtesy, and the development of concentration, coordination, and fine motor skills. Every child learns at their own pace in a calm, respectful, and beautifully prepared environment.

This week we have been very busy strengthening our fine motor skills through lots of hands-on activities! One of the biggest favourites this week has definitely been the latch boards. Each board has a surprise picture hidden inside, so the children were very excited to discover what was behind each latch. They loved this activity so much that they chose to repeat it several times throughout the day! 😊

Another favourite activity has been our animal sound game. 🐄🦁🐘 First, we used our animal figurines to name each animal and listen to the sounds they make. Then we challenged ourselves by choosing five animals, listening to the sounds in a random order, and trying to match the correct animal to the sound. The children absolutely loved it!

We have also been practising peeling stickers this week. The stickers were meant to go onto paper… although somehow a few ended up on faces and clothes instead! 😂

For our practical life food preparation activity, we used rockmelon this week. The children practised their cutting and tonging skills while also exploring the fruit through touch, smell, taste, and texture. Each week we are introducing a different fruit so the children can experience a variety of sensory experiences while developing coordination and independence.

We have also been practising putting on T-shirts independently and working on more challenging puzzles. Our older children have been exploring handwriting in the sand tray and on the chalkboard, as well as using the Moveable Alphabet to sound out and build words. One of our children achieved a very exciting milestone this week — after lots of practice, she was able to sound out word labels and successfully match them to their pictures all by herself. She has been working very hard on this skill and was incredibly proud of herself when she succeeded! 🌟

On Friday, one of our school-aged children joined us for her student-free day and worked together with one of the younger children to make banana bread.🍌 They collected the ingredients, measured, mixed, and completed the baking almost entirely independently — and it turned out pretty good too!

The children also became very creative and painted boxes to make a tractor and trailer.🚜 One child could sit inside while another pulled them along. Of course, the guinea pigs also joined in the fun, enjoying lots of cuddles, pats, and snacks while riding along in the “trailer.” 🐹💕

What a wonderful week full of learning, creativity, teamwork, and fun!

What a wonderful week we’ve had at Monte Kids Family Day Care!

Our older children have been diving into the fascinating world of food chains and discovering just how important the sun is to all living things. Through our fun “Sun Game,” the children explored how plants use the sun’s energy to make their own food, and how herbivores, carnivores, and omnivores all rely on one another to survive. They then created their own food chains, practising their cutting and gluing skills along the way. ✂️🖍️

We also began learning about weather, focusing on wind and what causes it. The children had so much fun pretending to be the wind, blowing ping pong balls across water using straws! One child initially found this challenging, so we adapted the activity and practised blowing the balls around the room first to build confidence and control. After some persistence and encouragement, she tried again across the water and succeeded — the smile on her face said it all! 💨😊

Handwriting practice continued this week with our chalkboards and rainbow letters, helping strengthen fine motor skills and letter formation. We also had a meaningful opportunity to revisit our peace tray after a small disagreement. The children created apology cards for one another, opening up thoughtful conversations about feelings, communication, and how we can move forward kindly together. 💛

Our younger children have been busy developing practical life skills, including cutting fruit, serving with tongs, washing windows, and cleaning kitchen items. They are also beginning to pour their own drinks at lunchtime from small jugs — such wonderful growing independence! 🫗

One of our toddlers also started learning her very first board game! The game involves matching colours and working together to stop the crow from eating all the fruit. It has always been a favourite here and is such a beautiful first game for learning turn-taking, cooperation, colour recognition, and teamwork.

Other activities included matching objects and pictures, sorting farm animals and insects, and exploring mapping skills. 🐄🦋🗺️

And our youngest little learner has discovered confidence on his feet! He is now zooming around proudly with his shopping trolley, learning how to turn and navigate around obstacles. Watching his excitement as he gains mobility and independence has been such a joy. 🛒❤️

It has been a week full of curiosity, resilience, kindness, and growing independence — all beautiful parts of the Montessori journey. 🌱

This week has been full of busy hands and curious minds.

Our younger friends caught the cleaning bug! After learning to wash their dishes following lunch, they became eager to clean everything. With some new scrubbing brushes, they happily got to work on the pavers, outdoor ball run pipes, bikes, and mud kitchen equipment—anything they could find to scrub! It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm for caring for their environment.

They also began exploring early categorisation skills, sorting insects and farm animals, and continued developing emotional awareness by grouping picture cards into happy, scared, and disgust.

Our older friends explored the water cycle, carrying out an experiment to observe condensation using a tin can, ice, and a warm day. This sparked great discussion and curiosity! We then began working with land and water forms—a favourite activity—carefully pouring water and placing animals in their correct environments. As an extension, the children created their own island cards using glue and sand.

We also introduced Froebel pinning, where the children enjoyed designing their own shapes and cutting them out, strengthening both creativity and fine motor skills.

Of course, there was still plenty of time for imaginative play—blowing bubbles, creating potions in the mud kitchen with flowers, and discovering new ways to build with Magnatiles.

A joyful week of exploration, independence, and creativity. 🌼

Over the last week, the children have been engaged in a variety of rich, hands-on learning experiences centred around volcanos, water, and the natural world.

We explored volcanos through both science and cooking experiences. The children enjoyed creating a volcanic eruption using baking soda and vinegar, observing the exciting chemical reaction. This interest carried over into our cooking activity, where we made “volcano tarts” with jam “lava” oozing from the centre—an enjoyable and memorable way to connect learning with creativity.

Our exploration of water included a displacement experiment. We filled a jug with water and carefully added glass beads, watching closely as the water level rose until it eventually spilled over. This sparked curiosity and discussion about cause and effect, as well as early scientific concepts.

One of our 3.5-year-olds extended her learning independently by creating her own land and sea map. She carefully traced circular shapes and continents before using watercolours to paint the oceans. She showed great focus and pride in her finished work.

Continuing our interest in rocks and minerals, we explored geodes. The children were excited to break them open with a hammer to discover the crystals inside. This experience required persistence, as the geodes were tougher to crack than expected, but the sense of anticipation and discovery made it worthwhile.

In music, our focus was on numbers. We sang songs such as “5 Little Ducks” and “6 Fat Sausages,” supporting early numeracy through rhythm and repetition. The children also enjoyed marching together to a 2/4 beat while listening to Music for the Royal Fireworks Suite – La Rejouissance by Handel.

Our younger learners worked on practical life activities which included serving rice for their friends, learning about emotions, and their fine motor skills.

To finish the week, the children suggested having a picnic for lunch. We embraced the idea, setting up a blanket in the shade and enjoying our meal outdoors. It was a lovely opportunity to connect with nature and each other in a relaxed setting.

Over the past fortnight at Monte Kids Family Day Care, we have wrapped up our exploration of space and gently shifted our focus back to Earth 🌏

The children explored the Sandpaper Globe and engaged in land, water, and air classification, followed by some hands-on fun making mud pies outdoors. We also observed the moon and learned about its different phases, sparking lots of curiosity and discussion.

Our nature table was a highlight, filled with a variety of rocks and minerals. The children especially loved examining a sparkly piece of pyrite up close.

As the weather begins to cool, we introduced the concept of seasons through object sorting activities. As always, the children followed their interests, choosing from a wide range of purposeful work.

Our youngest learner is developing beautifully, practising crawling up ramps and taking steps while pushing a trolley. Our toddlers have been busy building skills through 2-piece puzzles, classification, sorting, fine motor work, and practical life activities. They also enjoyed playing with the mystery bag, having fun feeling inside to find the animal that was asked for—without looking! One special moment reminded us of the power of the absorbent mind—when a toddler confidently shared the names of the planets without being explicitly taught!

Our older children engaged in practical life work, explored Colour Box 3, and continued developing their language, handwriting, and maths skills. A spontaneous car wash turned into a full cleaning session, with bikes—and even the glass doors—getting a good scrub!

To finish the fortnight, we enjoyed some Easter cookie decorating together 🐣

This week at Monte Kids, we continued our journey through the solar system, exploring more planets and proudly finishing our model solar system—which didn’t turn out too bad at all! 🚀 We also revisited our rust experiment and were excited to see the red rust forming, helping us understand why Mars appears red.
On Tuesday, we celebrated St Patrick’s Day ☘️ at the request of one of our children. We baked delicious green cupcakes, had fun trying to learn an Irish jig, and planted some peas—following a lovely Irish tradition associated with the day.
Our music experiences took us around the world as we explored instruments and sounds from different cultures. Everyone was eager to have a turn playing the djembe and wrist shaker, and we enjoyed listening to African drumming and the deep, unique sounds of the didgeridoo. 🎶
Outdoor play brought lots of creativity and collaboration. The children loved drawing with chalk on the pavers—one child even remembered hopscotch from a few months ago and created her own version, carefully adding numbers. It was a lovely moment when one of our toddlers recognised and read the numbers, much to her delight!
Our youngest learner has been busy exploring and experimenting. He discovered building sticks and thoughtfully tried to fit one into a shape sorter, persisting as he manoeuvred it around other objects. He has also been enjoying pulling scarves from a cylinder, removing rings from a chopstick, and discovering that throwing objects into the air can lead to very funny and surprising outcomes!
The older children showed great curiosity while investigating a water bug we found last weekend, learning how it uses its strong front legs to catch prey—even animals larger than itself. 🐞
Sensorial materials have been inspiring some wonderfully creative structures, and teamwork was on full display in the sandpit as the children worked together to build sandcastles, with older children guiding and supporting the younger ones.
We also had a strong focus on maths this week, with one child being introduced to the Number Rods and Cards and experiencing great success in her very first lesson.
It’s been a week full of exploration, collaboration, and discovery—we can’t wait to see what next week brings! 🌟

This week at Monte Kids we continued our exploration of space and the amazing planets in our solar system. We focused on Mars, Venus, Jupiter and Saturn, learning about their unique features and what makes each planet different.

The children were very excited to do a rust experiment to explore why the soil on Mars appears red. We also began creating our own models of the solar system, carefully thinking about where each planet sits.

Our maths work connected beautifully with our space learning. We explored the different number of moons each planet has, using the Golden Beads to help us visualise the differences in quantity. The Golden Beads were also used to compare the size of Earth and Jupiter, which helped the children see just how enormous Jupiter really is!

In other Montessori work this week:
🔢 We explored making combinations of 10 using the Number Rods.
🧱 We discovered how the Pink Tower and Broad Stairs work together by building creative structures.
🔢 We continued practising with the Golden Beads and Number Cards, carefully laying them out in order.
🚶‍♀️ The children learned how to create a Red Rod maze and practised walking carefully through it without knocking the rods over — a wonderful exercise in concentration and body control.

Our science exploration also introduced the three states of matter — solid, liquid and gas, which linked perfectly to our discussion about Jupiter and Saturn being gas giants.

Our younger children were busy with lots of hands-on exploration. They loved the sensory squares, jumping on them and banging them to watch them move. They also worked with emotion cards, practising recognising and imitating different feelings. Other favourite activities included spooning work, picture matching, naming animals, and colour naming.

Our youngest learner had some exciting physical milestones this week — crawling up the stairs and pushing a trolley while on his knees, showing growing strength, coordination and determination.

This week at Monte Kids we began exploring the wonders of space with our older children. We started with the Cosmic Nesting Boxes, helping the children visualise where we fit within the universe – from our home, to Earth, to the solar system, and beyond. It was a beautiful way to begin thinking about our place in the cosmos.

The children then created their own paintings of the universe, using colour and movement to represent stars and distant galaxies. Their interpretations were full of imagination and curiosity.

We also explored the solar system, looking at the planets and matching our wooden planets to pictures showing where they sit around the sun. This led to wonderful discussions about the sun, which we began turning into a paper mâché sun that we will continue working on next week.

Using the Metal Insets, the children traced the circle inset to draw the sun, and the ellipse inset to represent Mercury’s orbit. They carefully drew Mercury along the elliptical path and coloured the centre to show the sun. This activity beautifully combined art, science, and early geometry.

Alongside our space exploration, the children continued building their language and maths skills. One child has been working with the Golden Bead Material and Large Number Cards, practising laying them out in order and beginning to see how numbers grow and relate to each other. Others continued practising their letter sounds as they build the foundations for reading and writing.

Our younger children focused on developing practical life skills. They have been learning how to peel and cut a banana, carefully using their hands and tools to prepare their own snack. One child has also been practising taking off her shoes and socks when she comes inside after outdoor play. She is almost able to do it completely independently and now only needs a little help – such wonderful progress!

Practical life continued in the kitchen when one child requested that we make pink pikelets. This gave us the perfect opportunity to introduce sifting, which the children enjoyed watching and trying themselves.

The younger children were also introduced to watercolour painting, learning how to load their brush with paint rather than simply painting with water. It was a lovely first step into exploring this beautiful medium.

It has been a week full of curiosity, independence, and discovery, and we are excited to continue our journey through space next week! 🚀✨

This week we explored our backyard and our community, and the children showed such curiosity and care for the world around them.

We talked about where animals live and discovered how plants and animals in our backyard help each other. The children shared ideas about how we can help too — watering plants, being gentle with insects, and looking after our environment. We also explored the important people in our community — firefighters, vets, construction workers and more — and discussed how they help keep our community safe, healthy and growing.

Music time had a very enthusiastic dinosaur theme 🦖
We used tubs to make loud stomping noises, danced to the Dino Stomp, and did plenty of dramatic “RAAAH!” moments. The joy and confidence in their movements was beautiful to see!

Our nature tray sparked lots of interest this week. The children carefully examined shells and bark, using their senses to explore textures and patterns. There were some wonderful conversations about where these treasures might have come from.

On the Practical Life shelf, our picnic setting activity was a big hit. The children practised carefully laying out plates, cups and cutlery — showing concentration, coordination and a growing sense of independence.

We were also very excited to introduce our new pet, Stripe the blue-tongue lizard 🦎 The children observed him closely and spoke about how to care for him respectfully. Our guinea pigs enjoyed some gentle cuddles too, with the toddlers practising soft, kind hands — such beautiful nurturing behaviour.

For art this week, we explored:
🎨 Car painting — watching the tracks and patterns appear as wheels rolled through paint.
🍃 Leaf printing — first painting the leaf and pressing it onto paper, then placing the leaf down and painting around it to create detailed outlines. The children were fascinated by the different shapes and vein patterns revealed.

It has been a week full of exploration, movement, creativity and connection to our natural world and community. 🌏💚

We are so proud of how thoughtfully the children engage with their environment and each other.

🎉✨ Monte Kids Family Day Care Turns 5! ✨🎉

Five years ago, we opened the doors of Monte Kids Family Day Care with a vision of creating a calm, nurturing Montessori environment where little ones could grow, explore and belong. Today, we are celebrating 5 wonderful years of learning, laughter and community 💛

Over the years, we’ve had the absolute privilege of caring for many beautiful children. Each child who has walked through our doors has left a mark on our hearts. They have been our greatest teachers. Through their curiosity, determination, independence and joy, they have shown us new ways to see the world.

It truly has been a journey — not just professionally, but personally. Our Montessori journey has deepened in ways we never imagined. We have grown alongside the children:

The children have guided us to become better educators and better humans. They remind us daily of the power of respect, resilience and wonder.
