SCIENCE WEEK has officially begun! STEM is a big part of early learning, but it's not all about experiments and special materials. Scientific thinking grows by embracing curiosity, exploration and collaboration, and children are naturally inquisitive about, well, EVERYTHING!!
The pros at Science Week teamed up with the University of Canberra to develop fun activities for children aged 2-5, which align with the Early Years Learning Framework and use easy-to-access materials. Like these great bubble mix recipes! What can you find at home to make the biggest bubble?

It’s been a wonderful week of learning for the Brookes Street Kindergarten team!
Today we attended the Wings of Wonder professional development with Pathways to Resilience .
The session deepened our understanding of early brain development and children’s emotional, social and cognitive development. We explored how songs, nursery rhymes, movement and storytelling can nurture early literacy and numeracy, encourage emotional regulation, and strengthen communication skills.
We’re excited to bring these ideas into our kindergarten program and continue creating rich, engaging learning experiences for our children every day. 💚📚🎶

A huge thank you to Pete from Black Cockatoo Education PTY LTD for spending Wednesday with our team as we continued our Reconciliation journey.
Pete supported us in developing our Reconciliation Action Plan and deepening our understanding of the 8 Ways of Aboriginal Learning. It was an inspiring and thought-provoking day, providing us with valuable knowledge and practical ways to strengthen our practice and create meaningful learning experiences for the children in our care.
We are grateful to Pete for sharing his knowledge and look forward to continuing our journey of learning, reflection and respect together. 🖤💛❤️
Thank you to Brookes Street Community Kindergarten for having us attend this week to complete 8 Ways training and a RAP review. Happy Birthday Week Eliza!

We're so excited to be continuing our Pre-Kindy Playgroup, every Wednesday from 9:30am–11:30am!🌿💛
If you've been thinking about joining us, now is the perfect time! Our playgroup is a wonderful opportunity for children and their families to connect, explore, play and become familiar with our kindergarten environment in a warm and welcoming setting.
The Sunshine Valley Gazette has featured an article linked below highlighting our playgroup and sharing more about what makes these weekly sessions so special. We'd love for you to have a read and learn more about what we offer.
We look forward to welcoming both familiar and new faces each Wednesday! đź’š
Pre-kindy playgroup gives children a confident start
A free Nambour playgroup is helping young children become familiar with kindergarten before their first official day, while giving families an early sense of belonging within the school community.
Brookes Street Nambour Community Kindergarten has welcomed a new group of families to its Pre-Kindy Playgroup following renewed funding through the Queensland Department of Education’s Great Start to Kindergarten Program.
The playgroup was launched in 2025 and returned this year after its first group of participants made a smooth transition into kindergarten.
The 2026 program began on Wednesday, July 15, and runs each Wednesday from 9.30am to 11.30am.
Each session follows a familiar routine and gives children the freedom to take part in painting, playdough, construction, imaginative play and outdoor activities including swings, the sandpit and visits to the kindergarten’s chickens.
Families can enjoy morning tea during the session before children, parents, grandparents and carers gather for a story and songs.
The kindergarten said the playgroup was designed to build confidence, friendships and familiarity with educators and the kindergarten environment.
Children who attended last year’s program and began kindergarten in 2026 had already formed relationships with staff and other children, helping them settle into the new routine.
Parents Grace and Ben Lynam said the playgroup made a significant difference when their twin boys started kindergarten.
“Our boys and their younger sister all loved attending, and felt so comfortable and familiar in the environment,” they said.
“When it came to drop-off for their first ever kindy day, we couldn’t believe how smooth it went. They knew the space, they knew the people, they felt so ready to be there and happily waved us goodbye.”
Other parents said the program had also helped them meet families and become part of the kindergarten community before their children formally enrolled.
Brookes Street Nambour Community Kindergarten thanked the Department of Education for continuing to support the program.
The kindergarten said the playgroup was open to children not yet old enough for kindergarten and provided an opportunity to develop social skills, confidence and an enjoyment of learning through play.
Families considering kindergarten for 2027 or later can visit the Brookes Street Nambour Community Kindergarten website to join the waiting list or enquire about the Pre-Kindy Playgroup.
