The research is clear 📚 reading aloud is one of the most powerful things we can do for our children.
When we read with a child, we’re doing far more than sharing a story. We’re building the foundations for language, confidence, curiosity and a lifelong love of learning.
Decades of research shows that children who are read to regularly:
💛 Build stronger language skills
Hearing rich varied language in books exposes children to far more words than everyday conversation alone. This growing vocabulary helps them understand, communicate and make sense of the world.
💛 Develop early literacy skills long before they learn to read
Through stories, children learn how books work – that print carries meaning, that pages turn left to right, and that stories have a beginning, middle and end. These early understandings make learning to read feel familiar and exciting.
💛 Strengthen phonological awareness
Rhymes, rhythms and playful sounds help children hear the building blocks of language.
💛 Grow their comprehension and thinking skills
Talking together about a story, predicting what might happen, wondering how a character feels, and connecting events to real life helps children develop memory, problem-solving, and higher-order thinking.
💛 Experience connection, comfort and joy
Shared reading fosters calmness, closeness, and moments of joint attention. These warm interactions support a child's sense of security and belonging.
Most importantly, children who experience positive, engaging reading moments from a young age are more likely to develop a genuine love of books - something that matters even more than early literacy skills alone.
Reading is simple, joyful, and sets children up for success in school and life.

Our Nursery 2 children have been busy exploring, discovering, and building confidence through play!
As shared by our Nursery 2 Lead Educator, Stacey, our focus has been on creating a strong sense of belonging while planning learning experiences around the children’s interests.
The children have loved exploring gross motor obstacle courses, giving them opportunities to crawl, climb, balance, and navigate different challenges. These experiences support coordination, confidence, spatial awareness, and problem-solving as they learn through movement.
They have also been exploring cause and effect through cars and different modes of transport. By pushing, rolling, and racing vehicles across different surfaces, the children discovered how speed and movement can change the outcome, encouraging curiosity, investigation, and early scientific thinking.
Another favourite experience has been baking lemonade scones together. Through measuring, mixing, and taking turns, the children strengthened their fine motor skills, communication, independence, and confidence while enjoying a fun hands-on cooking experience.

Kindy Learning at Goodstart Early Learning Doolan St 🌱📚✨
Our Kindy children have been busy exploring, discovering, and growing through meaningful hands-on experiences!
As shared by our Kindy Teacher, Miss Lisa, the children have been learning about the life cycle of plants by growing climbing beans in our Kindy yard. They’ve been caring for their plants each day, counting leaves, measuring their growth, and observing the different stages of the life cycle. Inside the classroom, they’ve extended their learning by sequencing the plant life cycle, drawing each stage, and using their early literacy skills to label their work.
The children have also been building confidence in recognising and writing their own names. From setting the lunch table using name cards to participating in fun transition games, these everyday experiences are helping develop school readiness skills in an engaging and meaningful way.
Board games have also become a favourite in our Kindy room, supporting children’s numeracy, communication, turn-taking, and teamwork. It’s been wonderful to see their confidence grow as they now play independently with their friends.
And with Mother’s Day just around the corner, our Kindy children have been busy creating something extra special for the important people in their lives. 💐💛
Every day in Kindy is filled with opportunities to learn, grow, and thrive through play.

Kindness Incursion at Goodstart Early Learning Doolan St 🌳💛
Our children were introduced to “Bark” the Kindness Tree, where they enjoyed an interactive story about the power we all have to show kindness through our words and actions.
Through engaging discussions, the children explored the importance of expressing their feelings and learning how to manage big emotions like sadness and anger in positive ways. We also conducted a special rice experiment, showing how kind and unkind words can have different effects — a powerful and meaningful learning experience for everyone.
To extend their learning, the children created their own kindness trees using colours that represent positive affirmations: I am safe, I am loved, I am kind, and I am happy 🌈✨
This was such a beautiful and meaningful experience that supports our children’s social and emotional development. We look forward to continuing these conversations and watching our kindness grow every day 💛
