Many junior cricketers don't lift their bat before they play a shot. Most don't know it's costing them timing, power and options.

It's not about how high the lift is. It's about when it starts.

Get that right and everything else flows.

"Bowl a good length."

It's one of the most common instructions in cricket. But often one of the least explained to juniors.

Here's the secret.

A good length isn't a spot on the pitch. It's the length that makes the batter hesitate.

Forward or back? Attack or defend?

Once young bowlers understand that, they know where to aim. They start asking better questions of batters. They start bowling more consistently.

💬 What's a bowling concept your child finds hardest to understand?

Drop it below—we might cover it next. 🏏

Winter has a funny way of making cricket feel a long way off.

Then suddenly the pre-season arrives.

The kids who don't start from scratch aren't always the ones who trained the hardest over winter.

They're usually the ones who simply kept their ticking over.

A little batting.

A little bowling.

A little fielding.

Small habits now make returning to cricket so much easier.

"Play yourself in."

It sounds like cautious cricket. It's actually smart cricket.

👀 Your eyes and brain need time to adjust to pace, bounce and movement.

That's not weakness. That's biology.

The world's best batters don't always attack their first ball...They gather information first.

💬 What's the biggest mental challenge your child faces when batting?

Drop it below—we might cover it next.

Kids who love never really stop thinking about it.

One more backyard game.
One extra bowl.
One more challenge.

That's how confidence grows.

The RCA Off-Season Skills Passport gives cricket-loving kids a fun journey through world cricket while helping them build skills they'll take into next season.

Comparison is one of the quickest ways to steal a child's confidence.

Your child is sub-consciously watching the teammate who...

🏏 Bats higher
🥎 Bowls faster
🧤 Seems to do everything effortlessly

Before long, they're trying to become someone else instead of becoming the best version of themselves.

The truth?

Every cricketer develops differently.

The player who dominates at ages 10 & 11 isn't always the one leading the team at 15.

The child who keeps showing up, keeps learning and keeps believing often catches up and often goes straight past.

Help your child compare themselves to one person...yesterday's version of themselves.

That's the comparison that really matters.

🤝 In partnership with The Resilience League – follow them for more on building resilient kids on and off the field.

💬 Has your child ever compared themselves to a teammate?

"Keep your elbow up."

It's one of the most common instructions junior cricketers hear...but very few are explained why.

Here's a simplified version:

🏏 Your elbow helps control the bat face.

🏏 Your bat face controls where the ball goes.

Once kids understand that connection, "keep your elbow up" suddenly makes a lot more sense.

👇 What's the cricket instruction your child hears all the time but still finds confusing?

Let us know in the comments—we might explain it in our next post!
