The Cello Room The Cello Room ... a place to learn, practice, daydream, create. Rather I like to think that music education can produce professional human beings.

I have long wanted to have a page which celebrates music and in particular, the value of learning to play a musical instrument. Cello playing has taken me on a lovely journey through life and continues to give wonderful experiences and opportunities for travel, joy and self reflection. I am continuously learning about life and myself through the practice of learning the cello and how to be the bes

t musician I can be. I have also long held the view, that the value of music education is not purely in it's ability to produce professional musicians. Whether it be in a school music program, or in a private studio, the value to a child's development of a 20 - 60 minute weekly relationship with an adult whilst learning a skill is immeasurable. I personally benefitted from it, and will always vouch for its value. With this in mind and after many wanderings through various methods of instruction (in which I never felt quite good enough as a teacher), in 2010 I was lucky enough to meet Fran Firth, a Suzuki cello teacher, and became involved with learning more about the Suzuki Method. I am thrilled, that here I have found a way of teaching children (and I've also taught a number of adults successfully) that embraces the whole person, strongly includes parents, and creates a sense of fun and connection from which musical skill becomes a by-product. Hence this page. I hope it will both inspire budding cellists, and provide professional development for teachers and others interested in the value of music in their lives. Bronwen Whyatt
