MESSAGE FROM Master Paul Mitchell

To all Grade 2 Students and Above

As you progress towards Black Belt and the senior levels of United Taekwondo, grading becomes about much more than simply knowing your patterns, techniques and terminology.

Your Training Calendar is designed to help you, your instructor and me follow your progress and determine when you are genuinely ready to take the next step.

Our expected minimum is 8 regular training sessions per month, plus 2 additional sessions. One at another United Taekwondo hall and one Senior Training.

We understand that some students have work, family, school, study or other sporting commitments that may prevent them from achieving this every month. These sporting circumstances can be recorded on your calendar. Genuine additional training completed at home can also be recorded.

However, attendance alone does not make someone ready to grade.

As you move towards Black Belt, we look at the whole student, including:

Attendance and consistency
Correct technique
Your willingness to listen, learn and improve
Attitude and mindset towards your training
Being a positive role model
Willingness to assist others in class
Your ability to communicate and engage with students when you are given the opportunity to teach

Recently, a Grand Master in Taekwondo shared an interesting way of assessing grading readiness with me.

When he assesses a student, he looks for three significant areas that the student is consistently getting wrong or has been asked to improve but has not yet changed.

If he identifies three, he asks the student to continue training before grading.

I believe there is an important lesson in this.

IF YOU ARE ASKED TO WAIT

If your instructor or I ask you to wait for the next grading, you should know why.

We should be able to explain the areas that need improvement and what we want to see from you before you are recommended again.

Being asked to wait is not a punishment and does not mean you have failed.

It simply means that there are areas of your Taekwondo development that need more time, training or improvement before you take the next step.

Sometimes the best thing an instructor can do for a student is not rush them.

Our responsibility is not just to help you achieve your next belt. It is to make sure that when you wear that belt, you are ready for the responsibility and standard that comes with it.

The higher your grade, the more we expect from you. Not only in your Taekwondo ability, but also in your attitude, commitment, leadership and example to others.

Your Training Calendar is therefore not simply about collecting signatures.

It represents your journey.

Train consistently.
Listen to your instructors.
Work on the areas you find difficult.
Help others.
Accept guidance.
Keep improving.

When the time comes for your grading, we want you to walk onto the floor knowing that you have genuinely earned the opportunity to take that next step.

We are all working towards the same goal of maintaining a consistently high standard while helping every student become the best martial artist and person they can be.

Let's build an incredible organisation together.

All the best
Master Paul

This has deeply shocked not only our community, but many others as well. One of our instructors is currently in ICU at Wollongong Hospital, on life support.

We ask that you please take a moment to read the story below and support this beautiful family during an incredibly difficult time. As a community, we will also work together to help them find a path forward and become self-sufficient.

You’ll see both small and large donations, every single one matters. The response so far has been truly overwhelming, and when you read Heba’s story, you’ll understand why.
Heba is deeply loved, and that love is now being reflected in the support surrounding her and her family.

HEART-BREAKING STORY

On Sunday 26th April, Heba suffered a sudden medical emergency while playing with her beloved Woonona Sharks at Ocean Park. She was urgently transported to Wollongong Hospital, where she went into cardiac arrest shortly after arrival. Heba was intubated and admitted to the ICU, where doctors discovered blood clots in her lungs, resulting in a lack of oxygen to her brain.

Since that day, Heba and her family have been facing an incredibly difficult and uncertain journey. Despite the tireless efforts of her medical team, Heba has not responded to treatment as hoped. She remains in a medically induced coma, with her loved ones close by, as doctors have indicated that she may not regain consciousness.
We are reaching out to our community to support a beautiful local family experiencing one of the most heartbreaking times imaginable.

Heba is the heart of her family - a devoted wife to Khaled, a loving mother to Adam and Emmie, and deeply cherished by her extended loving family. Together, Heba and Khaled have been building a life, raising their two wonderful children and creating a home filled with care, generosity, and love.

Heba has always been someone who gives to others without hesitation. Through her role with the SES Wollongong Finance team, she has supported emergency response efforts and helped communities during times of crisis. She is an integral part of the Woonona Football Club and, like many who love the game, a big fan of Liverpool Football Club. She is also a passionate and dedicated black belt who trains with United Taekwondo. Alongside this, Heba co-owns Oz Wedding Photography with Khaled, capturing life’s most meaningful moments for others. She also loves creating beautiful cakes through My Cake Creations - a talent that brought her happiness and brightened the lives of those around her.

She is truly one of the most selfless and compassionate people you could meet - always the first to show up for others in their time of need.

Now, it is her family who needs that same support.

Heba has been the primary income earner for her family, and with her now in hospital the family now faces complete uncertainty. Khaled is doing everything he can to support their children while carrying the emotional weight of this devastating situation. With ongoing living expenses, including rent, the financial pressure is immediate and overwhelming.

During this incredibly difficult time, we are asking for your support to help ease the financial burden on Khaled - allowing him to focus on what matters most: being by Heba’s side.

Every donation, no matter how small, will make a meaningful difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this page and keeping Heba and her family in your thoughts means just as much.
This is a family who has given so much to others in times of crisis. Now, it’s our turn to stand beside them.

Thank you for your kindness, generosity, and support.
