This week our CEO Elizabeth Death met with the Hon Di Farmer, Shadow Minister for Education and the Early Years, to chat about all things early childhood education and care in Queensland.

It was a valuable opportunity to discuss the important role the sector plays in supporting children, families and communities, as well as some of the key opportunities and challenges facing early childhood education and care across the state.

We appreciate the opportunity to share insights from the sector and look forward to continuing conversations that help shape positive outcomes for Queensland's children and families.

Cold and flu season arrives with cooler weather. Young children get sick frequently as their immune systems develop, but good hygiene habits reduce how often illness spreads.

Hand washing works better than any product you can buy. We teach children to wash hands properly at routine times such as after toileting, before and after eating, and after wiping noses. Consistent routines help build habitual hygiene practices.

We also keep spaces well-ventilated, help children learn to cough into elbows rather than on hands, and encourage outdoor play in a variety of weather (reminder to label warmer winter clothing!).

These hygiene habits help protect everyone in the family, not just the child learning them, and promote healthy bodies and lifestyles.

The Easter school holidays are almost over, and it’s easy to get caught up in thinking about tasks and things you “didn’t get time for”. So while there’s still a few days left, here’s a simpler list. Have you noticed cooler mornings, magpies calling out for mates, dew on the lawn, awesome weather, and earlier sunsets? What about-

• Spend time in the garden – the heat of Summer has eased off, and it’s a great time to w**d or plant Autumn produce
• Walk to a local park and throw a frisbee
• Grab some pillows and lay on the trampoline to see who can see the first star. What constellations can you see?
• Takeaway/picnic dinner while you watch the sunset
• Ride a bike or a scooter along a jetty or boardwalk
• Make boats from leaves, sticks and seedpods and race them down a creek
• Check out a nearby national park or state forest walking trail. Many are short and family-friendly, and make for a fun start to the day.
• Join up with friends or family for a game of spotlight

We are so excited to have our awesome new playground handed over this morning for our kindergarten children to explore and play on today. We absolutely love how the design centred around our beautiful tree. It is going to be the perfect spot for those quiet moments in the day to just sit and observe the world around them.

Starting childcare or kindergarten is a big milestone - for children and parents alike.

A few things that can help: visit the centre beforehand, establish a goodbye routine, pack a comfort item, and trust that it's okay for emotions to flow.

In our digital world, screens are everywhere. Whilst technology has its place, nothing can replace the rich learning that happens through hands-on play and real-world exploration.

When children engage in active play, they're developing crucial skills that screens simply can't teach. Physical play builds motor skills and coordination. Creative play with blocks, paint, sand, and water develops problem-solving and imagination. Social play teaches negotiation, empathy, and communication.

We prioritise play-based learning in our programs. Children need rich sensory experiences, opportunities for movement, and time for deep engagement with materials and peers.

We encourage families to be mindful about screen time at home. Consider screen-free mealtimes, outdoor play after child care, and bedtime routines focused on books and conversation.

Balance doesn't mean equal time. It means prioritising what matters most for development.

At this time of the year, early childhood teachers are often approached by families asking whether their child is ready for Prep. Rather than looking at number recognition or writing their name, we encourage a holistic approach.

All children have different needs, interests and motivations, so each child’s transition to Prep will be unique. Families might consider:

1. Does the child seek help when needed, with both tasks and emotions?
2. How confident are they in approaching familiar adults and friends?
3. Are they able to respect boundaries, people and environments?
4. How keen are they do give new things a go?
5. What strategies help them to regulate their emotions when things get
tough?
6. Are they able to follow multi-step instructions?
7. Do they show independence and self-help skills as part of their daily
routine?
8. How easily does the child initiate play, or enter established play?

Your child’s Kindergarten teacher can help answer any questions you may have about your child’s readiness. The Queensland government also has a range of helpful information and resources available to assist families and educators in supporting children in their transition to school.
