The Art of Knowing Where to Look👀

“Watch me carefully. Notice the way I move and the way I present myself to the horse.”

I say this a lot.

Because when we watch beautiful horsemanship, our eyes are naturally drawn to the horse. We watch the movement, the expression, the transition, the beautiful canter.

Meanwhile, we can miss half the conversation.

Watch the human.

Watch their hands, their feet, their body position and the speed and flow of their movement. Watch where they look. Notice when they move, when they become still, how they pick up a rein and, perhaps most importantly, what they do immediately before the horse does something beautiful.

These things matter to the horse.

Our touch, movement, position, timing, intention and presence all contribute to whether we make sense. They help determine whether the horse experiences us as someone they can understand and confidently respond to, or as a slightly confusing biped who appears to be operating several body parts independently and hoping for the best.😆

This is why, when I teach, I deliberately shift people's attention.

Watch the horse. What do you see?

Now watch the transition.

Now watch me.

Watch my hands. Watch my feet. Where am I looking? What am I watching directly and what am I noticing peripherally?

Sometimes I will have someone repeat the same thing several times, but each time I give their brain something different to notice. Sometimes we take the horse away altogether so they can actually feel what their own body is doing before adding 500 kilograms of additional information.😬

Video is wonderful for this too. Watch the horse. Rewind. Watch the human. Rewind again and notice the detail you missed the first two times. [This is a skill I develop in my programs].

Because here is the interesting thing about observation:

➡We can all watch exactly the same thing and see something completely different.😵‍💫

What you notice determines what you learn.

So next time you see a horse working beautifully, drag your eyes away from the horse for a moment and watch the human working with the horse.

Watch how they move. Watch where they look. Watch their timing, their hands, their feet, their position, their movement.✅

Then start learning to notice those things in yourself.

Because the beautiful thing the horse is doing didn't appear from nowhere.

There is a conversation happening.

Earned Leadership - Becoming someone worth following😎

There is a quality that develops between a horse and human that I don't think we talk about enough.

Traditionally, we have called it *leadership*. And actually, leadership is a pretty good word for it. Unfortunately, it has accumulated so much baggage in the horse world that mentioning it can immediately summon arguments about dominance, being The Boss, and who, exactly, should be demanding respect from who...

So after considerable intellectual effort, I have solved this problem by putting another word in front of it.😆

*Earned leadership.*

Groundbreaking, I know.🙄

But the word *earned* matters because it reminds us that leadership isn't something you automatically possess because you own the horse or moved their feet first. It is a quality you have to consciously nurture, both in the horse's willingness to focus and follow you and in your own ability to be someone worth following.🤓

Imagine walking down a dark alley at midnight in the worst part of an unfamiliar city with someone calm, capable and streetwise whose judgement you trust.

You would probably stay close. You would let them make the decisions. If they said, "We're going this way", you'd go that way. Not because they had established dominance over you, but because you trusted their judgement.

And importantly, their confidence would make you feel more confident.

This is known as "trickle down confidence".🫶💪

Now walk down the same alley with someone who was hesitant and whispering, "Did you hear that? Should we run? OH GOD, WHAT WAS THAT?"😱

Same alley. Very different experience.

This is what I mean by earned leadership with a horse.

It develops when your horse learns, through experience, to focus on you, trust your judgement and defer to your decisions when they are uncertain. Instead of immediately feeling they have to take care of everything themselves, they increasingly look to you.

*Are we okay?*

And if you are genuinely okay, that can help them become okay too.

This is different from simply teaching a horse to understand your aids. A horse can know perfectly well what your leg and reins mean in the arena and still decide that your contribution is entirely irrelevant when the wind gets up, their friend disappears or the neighbour starts the lawn mower.😬

➡Understanding you is one thing. Looking to you when they aren't sure what to do is another.

And this quality has to be consciously nurtured.

Annoyingly, quite a lot of that work is on us.😬

We have to become better communicators and decision-makers. We need enough awareness to recognise when the horse is struggling, enough judgement to know when to persist or change the plan, and enough confidence to remain useful when things become difficult.

Because we cannot expect our horse to draw confidence from us if we have none to offer.

Fortunately, confidence is something we can build. It grows from competence. We learn, practise, improve our communication, make good decisions and appropriately challenge ourselves. We discover that we can handle situations that once felt difficult.

And the horse is doing much the same thing.

So you build earned leadership together. You start with clear communication and focus, then gradually stretch it into obstacles, distractions, new environments, wind, other horses leaving and all the perfectly ordinary events horses occasionally interpret as the opening scenes of the apocalypse.😏

But leadership can also be undermined. Become frightened and indecisive and the horse may decide it needs to take care of things itself. Become frustrated, aggressive or relentlessly perfectionistic and *you* become another source of tension.💥

So give yourselves successful experiences.

The horse becomes uncertain. They look to you. You remain calm enough to think. You communicate clearly. You make a good decision. They follow your guidance.

Everything turns out okay.

Then do it again.

You don't become your horse's leader because you own them, control them or declare yourself to be one.

The Great Obedience Scandal 🔥

I read and listen to plenty of questionable ideas about horses on social media. The interesting thing about my work is that I also get to see what happens when those ideas leave Instagram or Facebook, travel through a human being and eventually manifest in an actual horse.

There are plenty of ideas I can disagree with and move on from. This one I can't, because I am seeing what happens when caring people become frightened of teaching their horses clearly and consistently. I see the confusion, deteriorating behaviour and frightened humans trying desperately to be kinder while their horses unravel and become increasingly difficult to navigate.

So I am going to counter this one. Again.😎

First, a little background.

Apparently, teaching a horse to reliably respond to us has become morally suspicious. Reliable responding is now framed as obedience. But it gets worse, so bear with me. Obedience might diminish "agency". A horse responding correctly might merely be producing a "conditioned response", while resistance gets a philosophical promotion. The horse has said "No". Celebrate the No. Proof that the authentic horse remains gloriously intact.😎

This is where I ask people who come to work with me a rather ridiculous question.

➡How did you feel driving here today?

Did stopping at the red light make you feel oppressed? 🤨Did driving on the left fill you with simmering injustice? 🧐When you saw a GIVE WAY sign, did you think, I could comply, but how will anyone know I still have agency? 😳Did you occasionally cross onto the wrong side of the road just to reassure yourself that society hadn't conditioned away your authentic driving self?🤯

Oddly, nobody has.🤷‍♀️

Yet you were spectacularly *obedient*, if that's how we want to frame it, all the way here. You stopped, gave way, stayed in your lane and responded to arbitrary symbols exactly as you had been taught.😱

Good grief. *You've been conditioned.*😱

Except you don't experience it as oppression. You experience it as knowing how to drive. The rules are so well learned that you barely think about them. You understand how to navigate the system, and that competence gives you enormous freedom within it.🤔

That's the point.

Of course horses aren't humans, and I can't tell you exactly what a horse subjectively experiences when it responds to a learned signal. But neither can the person telling you that reliable responding represents some terrible erosion of the horse's agency.🙄

➡That's a human story being placed upon the horse.

What we do know is that horses are extraordinary learners and adapters. When we train them, we are teaching them how to navigate us. Halter pressure means something. Rein and leg signals mean something. Stop, go, wait, follow and load mean something. Teach those things well and the horse no longer has to keep guessing what the bloody road signs mean.

Now imagine the Australian government changing the road rules every few days. Monday, red means stop. Tuesday, stopping represents excessive compliance. Wednesday, you're encouraged to honour your authentic relationship with the intersection. Thursday, the old rules return because someone has just been cleaned up by a B-double.🫣

That isn't freedom. It's an unpredictable world, and it would be bloody stressful.

This is why I object so strongly to narratives that make caring people frightened of clarity and consistency. I have seen where this can end up. Compassionate language doesn't automatically produce compassionate or good consequences. An inconsistent human creates an incredibly confusing world for a horse.😕

And this is where I want to put a spotlight on the narrative itself.🔦

What happens when a training philosophy doesn't reliably produce the responses people need from their horses? You can examine the training, or you can construct a story that makes the unreliable response evidence of something more enlightened.🙄

Cue the semantic smoke machine.

Reliable responding becomes "obedience". Resistance becomes "agency". Refusal becomes a "No". An unintended behaviour becomes an "idea". Training that isn't producing reliable communication can suddenly be given a much more flattering interpretation.

Perhaps we've simply transcended obedience. 🎭

Maybe.

Or perhaps the training isn't very good when it meets reality.😎

That possibility matters, because if every poor outcome can be renamed enlightenment, we have created a philosophy remarkably good at protecting itself and remarkably poor at helping us recognise when horses and humans are struggling.

And no, I don't think that's automatically kinder, gentler or more thoughtful.

When an idea makes caring people feel guilty about providing clarity, while leaving horses trying to navigate an inconsistent human world, it can become cruel despite all the beautiful language surrounding it.

Teach your horse how to navigate you. ❤

Be clear, predictable and consistent. When your horse's response changes, investigate it. Consider pain, fear, confusion, physical difficulty and your own training, and change what you're doing when the evidence tells you to.

But don't let somebody else's narrative convince you that understanding is oppression or resistance is freedom.😎

Horses don't live inside our philosophical stories.

➡They live with the consequences of them.

I’m Looking for Local Connectors Around Australia❤

As I start planning my 2027 clinic and event calendar, I’m looking for people around Australia who would like to help bring one of my events to their area.

I call these people *Connectors*.

You might simply think:

“I’d really like Shelley to come here. I know some people who would too.”

Perfect.

Perhaps you own a great equestrian facility and would like to host an event.

Perhaps you have a group of horse friends who would love to learn together.

Perhaps you’re involved with a club, business or local horse network.

Or perhaps you have a bigger idea and would love to help create a more connected, supportive horse community in your area.

There are lots of reasons to become a Connector.🥰

➡️WHAT IS A CONNECTOR?

Connectors are the people who make opportunities happen.

My friend Kate is a great example. She wanted lessons from me, so she gathered some friends who also wanted to learn and helped organise the opportunity.

Simple.✅

She got the education she wanted, her friends benefited too, and an event happened because one person was prepared to put their hand up.

That’s exactly what I’m looking for.

You don’t need to be an experienced event organiser. You don’t need to run a horse business or own a facility.

You just need some local knowledge, some connections and the enthusiasm to say:

“Let’s bring this here.”😃

➡️YOU CAN HELP SHAPE THE EVENT

This is one of the things I’m most excited about.

I don’t want to simply arrive with a predetermined clinic and tell everyone what we’re doing.

My Connectors can help shape the event.😎

You help me understand what would be valuable in your area, and together we can create an event that makes sense.

There is another reason I’m excited about finding my Connectors for 2027.

Recently, I surveyed my members of my Calm Willing Confident Horse Society about what was getting in the way of spending time with their horses.

Among the different challenges people described, one important theme emerged: *disconnection from other horse people and horse communities.*

People missed riding buddies, horsey friends, clubs, learning together and simply having people around them who understood this part of their lives.

It got me thinking.

Clinics and events aren't only places where we learn.

They bring people together.💗

Sometimes that might simply mean six or eight friends having a brilliant day learning with their horses.

But in some places, perhaps we can build something more.

A group that comes together again. People who start supporting one another. New friendships. More opportunities. Maybe even a community that continues long after I've packed up and gone home.

Not every Connector needs to want that.

But for the ones who do, I’d love to help you create it.❤

🚨Southern Hemisphere Warning: Spring Is Coming😎

Every spring, otherwise sensible horses develop some interesting opinions.

The bush on the arena your horse has had no issue with all year becomes suspicious. Geldings discover mares. Mares discover geldings. Grass becomes the most important substance on Earth and the horse who happily left its friends in July would now like to discuss the terms of that arrangement.

We call it spring silliness, usually as though the horse has failed to maintain the behavioural standards outlined in its employment contract.🙄

But spring is a good reminder of something we occasionally forget.

*The horse is still a horse.*🐴

We have domesticated horses extraordinarily well. We teach them to live behind fences, eat when and where we decide, leave their friends, travel in metal boxes and trot around circles while somebody judges the accuracy of the circles.

What we haven't done is remove millions of years of evolution.

Horses are seasonal animals, and spring changes their world...let's investigate this further...

👉 The horse knows the days are getting longer

Increasing daylight produces measurable changes in equine physiology.

One interesting example is prolactin, a hormone that rises as days lengthen in mares, stallions and, importantly, geldings.

So while your gelding may have parted company with his testicles many years ago, the rest of him remains subscribed to the seasons.

We know prolactin is involved in seasonal processes such as shedding the winter coat. What we don't know is whether it directly makes horses more energetic, spooky or reactive. It may simply be one measurable part of a much bigger seasonal biological transition.

Mares have the additional excitement of reproductive activity returning. Ovarian activity increases, cycling resumes and social and sexual motivations can change.

And the geldings notice.

A gelding becoming fascinated with a cycling mare doesn't necessarily have a mysterious hormonal disorder. The mare has changed. His social environment has changed. Something that wasn't terribly interesting three weeks ago may now be extraordinarily interesting.

Unfortunately, you would still like him to concentrate on his canter transition.

👉 Then someone renovates the paddock

Spring also changes what's going into the horse.

Rapidly growing pasture can dramatically alter energy and carbohydrate intake. Grazing changes. The gastrointestinal environment has to adapt. Body condition can change.

Meanwhile, humans sometimes continue feeding the same bucket they fed in July while regarding the increasingly magnificent paddock as landscaping.😬

For susceptible horses there is another important consideration spring grass can also increase the risk of laminitis, and sore feet aren't always obvious.

Sometimes the horse is simply reluctant to step out, uncomfortable turning, hesitant on firm surfaces or unusually resistant to moving forward....or they can just get more hyper-vigilant or spooky!

So when Danny becomes "difficult" every September, it's worth asking whether Danny is full of the joys of spring or whether Danny's feet hurt.🤔

Behaviour is information. Don't waste it.

👉 And perhaps there is some frustration involved

This is the part I think deserves more consideration.

Imagine having powerful motivations you don't intellectually understand.

Your biology says move, but there is a fence.

Stay with that horse, but you're being led away.

Eat, but the gate has been shut.

Follow everyone else, but someone would like a twenty-metre circle.

Investigate that interesting thing, but apparently we're doing shoulder-in.

There is nothing inherently wrong with asking horses to do these things. Domestic horses need to learn to function safely within our world.

But we should recognise that sometimes what we are asking has become *more difficult* because you have some competing instinctual drives for behaviour going on.

The horse hasn't necessarily forgotten its training. The competition for its attention, motivation and behaviour may simply have increased.🔊

👉 That's why spring silliness probably isn't one thing

Daylight is changing. Physiology is changing. Mares are cycling. Social dynamics are shifting. Pasture is changing. Energy intake may be changing. The gut is adapting and might be uncomfortable. Feet may become sensitive. Insects return. The environment gets busier.

Then, because the weather is finally pleasant, we suddenly start riding more.

A horse that spent much of winter pottering around the paddock is separated from its friends, loaded onto the float and taken to its first outing in four months.

Everyone is astonished when Danny arrives with rather more Danny attitude than anticipated.

👉 There is no cure for spring

Nor should there be.

The useful response is management.

Anticipate the change if your horse does this every year. Keep some consistency in exercise and training through winter. Reassess feed as pasture changes. Watch body condition and feet. Manage insects. Track your mare's cycle if her behaviour changes predictably. Notice changes within the herd.

And keep the basic training clear.

Because good training doesn't remove instinct. It gives the horse skills it can use *while instinct, excitement, uncertainty and competing motivations are present*.

A horse can notice another horse and still come with you. It can feel energetic and still respond to the rein. It can want to stay with its friends and learn that leaving them is safe and manageable.

That is perhaps the most useful way to think about spring silliness.

Underneath everything we've domesticated is still an animal responding to daylight, grass, other horses and seasonal biology.

Sometimes those ancient priorities collide rather spectacularly with our modern plans.😎

Understanding that doesn't mean lowering expectations, excusing dangerous behaviour or necessarily having to buy a supplement called *Spring Serenity Ultra-Calm Hormonal Gut Hoof Nervous System Support™*. 🤷‍♀️

It means becoming better at noticing what changed.

Because the goal isn't to cure the horse of being a horse.

It's to understand what being a horse is asking of them right now, and make better decisions because of it.❤

But I Already Know Those Exercises…🤷‍♀️
(Why knowing the moves is not the same as knowing what the heck you’re doing🔥)

Here’s a question.

Imagine you had to design a program that could turn someone into an expert at *your* job.

Pilot. Builder. Lawyer. Radiologist. Accountant. Police officer. Executive PA. Parent. Although parenting remains the only important profession where we hand you a small human and essentially say *best of luck with that*.🙄

What would you teach?

Not just what they need to *know*.

What must they be able to *do*?

What should they notice?

What do those observations mean?

And how do they decide what to do next?

This, rather conveniently, used to be my field.

Before working with horses full time, I worked in university creating programs for developing expertise in the medical and health professions. My research was particularly interested in how we develop people who can *think like experts*, rather than people who simply know lots of things. There is quite a bit that sits behind professions that have people's lives in their heads and mistakes can have deadly consequences.😎

So when I started developing my approach to teaching horsemanship, I used my experience and asked:

*What are the vital few skills that give people the greatest ability to work successfully with horses?*

I identified *22 essential exercises*.

These became my Reboot exercises.

And occasionally someone looks at the list and says:

"Oh. I know all those."🙄

Excellent.

I know what a scalpel is.

Please don't let me remove your appendix.

Because *knowing the exercise isn't the expertise.*

Take leading.

Can you lead a horse?

Probably.

But what exactly are you teaching while you do it?

What does the horse understand?

What are you observing?

Are they dragging you or you dragging them?

Can you tell when their attention changes?

Can you distinguish distraction from fear, confusion, discomfort or simply not understanding?

What does their body tell you?

When should you persist?

When should you change something?

What should you do next?

Suddenly walking Oakie from the paddock to the barn has become much deeper and layered than you thought.🧐

➡️This is what I actually teach

Every exercise has layers:

*WHAT* are you teaching?

*HOW* are you teaching it?

*WHAT* are you observing?

*WHAT DOES IT MEAN?*😎

And the big one:

*WHAT DO YOU DO NEXT?*🤓

That last question is where expertise starts appearing.

Because we're not really teaching horses exercises.

We're teaching communication.

Attention.

Waiting.

Self-carriage.

Balance and movement.

We're creating familiar patterns the horse understands that we can return to when fear, excitement or instinct suddenly arrives and commandeers the vehicle...you know the bit that can be very disconcerting.😎

Because training doesn't make a horse stop being a horse.🐴

You cannot install lateral flexion and uninstall 55 million years of evolution.

Sometimes evolution sees a wheelie bin and has thoughts.😆

Which brings me to Project Reboot

Project Reboot uses my 22 essential exercises.

But *Project Reboot isn't really about 22 exercises.*🤓

The exercises are simply the classroom.

I'm teaching you how to see the horse in front of you, understand what you're seeing and know what to do next.

So if you look at my exercises and think:

*"But I already know those."*

Brilliant.

Perhaps the more interesting question is:

*What do you know about what is happening underneath them?*🤔

Because you might know the choreography.

*I want to teach you HOW to dance.*

And if your horse is still unpredictable, confusing, difficult, or has quietly wandered off with your confidence, perhaps you don't need another fancy exercise.

Perhaps you need to learn how to see what you're currently missing.❤

That is what we do in Project Reboot.

How Many Horses Would Stay Sound for Longer if We Simply Gave Them Another Year to Mature? 🔥🤔

I saw this exact question on Facebook recently and every response I saw was essentially:

*YES.*🙌

And I understand why everyone responded that way.

It feels so obviously right that questioning it almost sounds like you’re advocating putting two-year-olds over 1.40 m fences before breakfast.😕

But I looked at it and thought:

Would they? 😎

Some probably would.

Some might not.

Because soundness is much more complicated than waiting for another birthday.🤓

The question quietly assumes that *older means better prepared*, and that doing less while waiting for the body to finish growing must therefore be better for the horse.

But there are a couple of rather large questions missing.

*What is the horse doing while we wait?*😎

And perhaps more importantly:

*What do we actually mean by “starting” a horse?*😎

Because starting isn’t one thing.

A horse started at two or three might be backed quietly, ridden for short periods, exposed to different environments and then given time off. Another horse of exactly the same age might be put into repetitive, physically demanding work six days a week.

Those horses have both technically been “started”.🤷‍♀️

They are not having remotely the same physical experience.

Likewise, there’s an enormous difference between a young horse living in a large, varied environment, travelling kilometres each day, negotiating hills and different surfaces, playing, accelerating, stopping and learning to organise its body, and a horse standing in a small flat paddock wandering between the hay and water. 🫣

Both horses are getting older.

They are not necessarily developing the same body.😎

Bones, muscles, tendons, joints, balance and coordination all respond to what the horse actually does.

So perhaps the important issue isn’t simply *the age at which the horse is started*.

It’s how that horse has been prepared, what starting actually involves, what happens afterwards, and whether the demands placed on its body are appropriate for that individual horse at that stage of development.🤓

That’s why I think we need to be careful with the idea that waiting and doing nothing is protecting the horse.

Because doing nothing is still doing something.

The horse’s body adapts to the life it is living.

A body that isn’t physically challenged doesn’t spend several years quietly building itself into an athlete in anticipation of our future plans.

Then one day we put a saddle on it, add the weight of a human and ask it to travel on circles, carry itself differently, balance, bend, transition and repeat movements its body may never have been prepared to perform.

But it’s five now.

So apparently we’re good.🙄

This doesn’t mean *start horses younger*.

It doesn’t mean *work young horses harder*.

And it certainly doesn’t mean that excessive or repetitive loading of developing horses can’t cause damage.

It means the whole question is more complicated than:

*young = vulnerable*

*older = soundness protected*

Soundness is influenced by what happens throughout the horse’s development. Movement, workload, recovery, feet, nutrition, surfaces, injuries and how the horse moves all matter. So does how progressively we prepare the horse for whatever job we eventually expect it to do.

So when every answer to this question is an enthusiastic *YES*, I don’t see an answer that necessarily reflects an understanding of soundness.

I see how seductive a simple answer can be.

Waiting may absolutely be appropriate for an individual horse.

But waiting *isn’t a conditioning programme*.

And a birthday isn’t a protective strategy.🔥

The more you know about something, the harder it becomes to answer complicated questions with a simple YES.

Calendar years tell us how old a horse is.

They don’t tell us what that horse has been doing, how it has developed, how it was prepared, what “starting” involved, or what happened afterwards.

Perhaps we put too much emphasis on *when horses are started* and not enough on *what we actually do with them*.

A horse started at three isn’t automatically being damaged.

A horse left until five isn’t automatically being protected.

The interesting bit is everything that happened in between.

Protecting horses from soundness problems isn’t about finding a magic birthday when their bodies suddenly become safe to use. It’s about understanding development and making sensible decisions about movement, preparation, loading, recovery and the individual horse.

Sometimes that means waiting.

Sometimes it means carefully doing more.

And sometimes it means realising that “leave them until they’re older” sounds wonderfully responsible while telling us almost nothing about how to develop a sound horse.❤

Knowing more makes simple questions messier.

That’s not uncertainty. That’s understanding the problem.
