A taste of what to expect in this Friday's 'Wide Mixes that work in Mono' workshop.
In the 2nd video about stereo mixing, I'm looking at the #01 YouTube stereo trick: Haas Delay - and I'll show what most YouTube videos won't tell you: the terrible damage Haas delays cause to your mix when listeners hear it in mono. And that happens often; on bluetooth speakers, iPhones, boomboxes and many, many club PAs.

And of course I'll share as many solutions as I can fit into a 10min video, such as mixing chunky, wide rhythm guitars, and how to keep lead guitars mono centred with lots of width coming from effects.

Want massive, wide lead guitars that don't sound washed out? Try this routing trick 🎸✨

If you put heavy reverb straight onto a dry lead guitar, you risk pushing it back in the mix and losing all its impact.
Here is how to get a huge statement sound using micro-pitch shifting and smart routing:

• Keep the main guitar dry and centered so it stays punchy and clear.
• Set up a stereo delay return
• Add pitch shifter post echo, decouple the left/right pitch. Shift left down -5 cents, and right up +5 cents.
• Send the delay (not the guitar) into a stereo reverb to create deep, wide space around the instrument without mud.

This gives you a thick, ultra-wide soundstage while keeping your main guitar front and centre.

"Stereo... Mono... GNARLY." 🎛️❌

That hollow, comb-filtered sound is what happens when you use the Haas delay trick to widen guitars and then sum your mix to mono.

Duplicating a track and shifting it by a few ms might sound wide in headphones, but it destroys your translation on phones and Bluetooth speakers.
The fix? Stop using artificial delay tricks and double-track your guitars instead.
By recording a genuine second take, human variation in timing and pitch gives you a massive stereo spread that stays completely solid when collapsed to mono.

Stop using the Haas delay trick to widen your mix. Here’s why! 🎧👇

Duplicating a track and delaying one side by a few ms seems like an easy win for quick stereo width. But the moment your track gets played in mono, that artificial delay creates severe comb filtering - making your instrument sound hollow and phasey.
In this snippet from Mix Session 009, I'm breaking down why the Haas trick fails.

Does your mix sound massive in headphones… but completely falls apart on a phone speaker?
If your synth or wide guitars suddenly vanish the moment you sum to mono, you’re dealing with phase cancellation.
Since most people listen to music today on mono Bluetooth speakers, phone speakers, or club setups, an ultra-wide mix that isn't mono-compatible will quickly fall flat.

Here's a hard truth about stereo widening plugins: if your mix relies on phase manipulation tricks to sound "big," it will collapse the moment it gets summed to mono on a phone or club system.
Real stereo width doesn't come from pushing a widening slider to 110% - it comes from understanding the physics of phase, engineering skills, and trained ears to detect problems in the stereo field.
