There is no news as yet on the impending VET FEE-HELP reforms but hopefully we will find out more on 1 July, the date on which the Department of Education and Training has indicated that new VET Guidelines will come into effect. One outcome of the new VET Guidelines will be that there will be a minimum number of VET units of study introduced for courses.

Other reforms will come into effect from 1 January 2016. For example, legislation will be introduced into Parliament to make it easier for students to seek a waiver of any VET FEE-HELP debt which they feel has been unfairly applied, as well as the requirement to publish a new Entry Requirements Procedure on provider web sites.

I will be looking out for VET FEE-HELP reform news and will keep you updated. Also feel free to call me to discuss your ongoing VET FEE-HELP needs.

Under the Streamlined Visa Processing (SVP) initiative, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) assesses all student visa applicants who are eligible for SVP as though they were a low immigration risk (similar to the current Assessment Level 1), regardless of their country of origin. This reduces the amount of documentation required, as well as the length of time it takes to issue the student visa.

AT this stage, SVP is only available for students enrolling in Advanced Diploma qualifications and RTOs are being invited by DIBP to apply through an opt-in arrangement, rather than applications being open to everyone.

I hope anyone who got to the ASQA Information Sessions on the new Standards for RTOs found them helpful. ASQA has also recently published a User’s Guide to the Standards for RTOs 2015 that will assist RTOs to understand and maintain compliance with the Standards. These information measures all form part of ASQA’s focus on reducing the regulatory burden and supporting RTOs to do the right thing. Organisations considering setting up as RTOs or existing RTOs may also find it useful to view a series of videos included on YouTube by ASQA
