Guest Judge Professor Lisa Slade said “An acclaimed contemporary artist, Stephen Bird has the knack of making poetic, and sometimes playful, statements in his chosen material, clay. This work reaches a whole new level of poignancy whereby Bird extends the storytelling aspects of his practice to focus on a locally known individual – Alfred. As Bird explains, ‘Alfred was a well-known and much-loved local figure in the Byron Shire’.

In this ceramic tribute to the ‘Shire’s great walker’ Bird uses the seemingly simple oversized plate (known traditionally as a charger) as a surface onto which he memorialises Alfred. The history and role of ceramics in memory and commemoration is never far from the artist’s mind. For him clay is a material with a memory and it can transform the everyday into the extraordinary.”

The $15,000 Award includes a two-week residency at the Nancy Fairfax Artist in Residence Studio at TRG&MOAC.

We are very excited to see BSA Director, Emma Walker, exhibiting as part of "Desert Varnish - Conversations with Fowlers Gap" present by Arthouse Gallery at this year’s Sydney Contemporary.

Sydney Contemporary is set to open next week and the team here at Arthouse Gallery are counting down the days! Arthouse will present ‘Desert Varnish - Conversations with Fowlers Gap’, an exhibition exploring the landscape of Fowlers Gap - the only arid zone in NSW and the location of a wide and varied population of flora and fauna. We held two residencies over two years in preparation for this show with the first taking place in early 2024, and the second in May 2026. Fifteen leading contemporary landscape artists were invited including Jo Bertini, Jo Davenport, Kate Dorrough, Belinda Fox, Ian Greig, Clifford How, Nicole Kelly, Amelia Lynch, Lauren O’Connor, Colin Pennock, Hobie Porter, Robyn Sweaney, Emma Walker, Shona Wilson and Joshua Yeldham who worked en plein air and in the onsite artist studios

Through an active curiosity and engagement with the natural environment Emma Walker seeks to form tactile and conceptual connections between the world she inhabits and the world within. Walker’s practice is exploratory and open ended with a continually expanding scope of enquiry that incorporates the use of timber, paint, clay, drawing materials, collage, photography, found objects, fabric, video and the written word. Her unique imagery emerges from a combination of experimentation and automaticity with each action and decision informing the next.

‘In the Balance’ … a study of objects inspired by my recent trip to the snowy Southern Alps of New Zealand, where noticeably shallower snow drifts delivered a quiet but firm reminder of a climate already changing.

Cast in recycled containers, these plaster forms were made at Byron School Of Art under the guidance of Kat Shapiro Wood. Their arrangement emerges from a desire to create a sense of precarious equilibrium: the feeling that if one object were shifted, the whole structure might fall.

In this way, the assembled pieces became an allegory for the delicate balance of our environment, and the ways in which human activity, particularly our dependence on fossil fuels, has disrupted it.

The final piece offers a sense of solidity and security: a moment of equilibrium achieved when all the right elements come together.

I was in New Zealand to test drive electric cars, just one way we can transition away from fossil fuels. Against a landscape where the effects of a warming climate were quietly visible, the significance of that purpose was not lost on me.
