🎧 What actually helps our students' mental health in a yoga class?

When I interviewed yoga students for the Mental Health Aware Yoga training, almost nobody talked about the postures.

Not the perfectly cued trikonasana, not the beautifully sequenced vinyasa. What they talked about, again and again, was how the class was held. The feeling of it. The safety of it.

This is part one of a special five part pop-up series on the A Grateful Life podcast, walking through Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga through the lens of mental health, especially for yoga teachers. We're starting with ahimsa, non-harming, the ground everything else is built on.

Something special starts tomorrow, and you’re hearing it here first!. 🌱

I've recorded a five part pop-up series for the A Grateful Life podcast, walking through Patanjali's eight limbs of yoga, one by one, through the lens of mental health.

And this one is especially for yoga teachers.

We begin tomorrow with ahimsa, non-harming, and how the way we hold a room can support our students' mental health, or subtly work against it.

Then over the next two weeks we move through all eight limbs, from the ethical foundations to the postures and the breath, right through to the quiet inner practices.

Each episode is short, and each one has something you can take straight into your next class.

Want to follow along? There's a free ebook that goes with the whole series. Grab it now, use it when you're planning your classes, and be ready when the first episode drops tomorrow.

Download the free ebook at https://www.mentalhealthawareyoga.com/8limbs, and follow A Grateful Life wherever you listen so you don't miss a single limb.

See you tomorrow on the poddy 🙏

Applications are closing tonight for the online Mental Health Aware Yoga scholarship!

The intention of this scholarship is to increase the accessibility to the Mental Health Aware Yoga training for yoga teachers who hold marginalised identities and those experiencing significant financial hardship.

We will be awarding several partial scholarships for the online Mental Health Aware Yoga training based on need and community contribution.

We encourage applications from those from BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ and other marginalised communities, especially those who are also bringing yoga to these communities.

Applications must be received by midnight tonight (Tuesday 19th August 2026 AEST).

To apply:
1. Go to www.mentalhealthawareyoga.com/online (for the online training) or www.mentalhealthawareyoga.com/hybrid (for the Mullumbimby training) or comment AWARE and we’ll send you the link
2. Scroll to the bottom of the page
3. Click on the APPLY FOR A SCHOLARSHIP button
4. Complete the application form

If the button is still there, we’re still accepting applications (but once it’s gone it’s gone!).

If you know a yoga teacher who cares deeply about their community and would not be able to take the Mental Health Aware Yoga training without a scholarship, please tag them and encourage them to apply.

We’d love to support them to take this training with one of our scholarship places.

And if you’d like to find out more about the training, visit www.mentalhealthawareyoga.com

If you’re a Yoga Teacher who cares deeply about the mental health of your students, we’d LOVE to share this training with you. Come join us ✨
