Year 11 Politics students took part in the Hotham Electorate Mock Parliament on Friday 9 October, hosted by Federal MP Clare O’Neil.

Taking on the roles of government, opposition and crossbench members, students debated two proposals: lowering the voting age to 16 and holding a referendum on whether Australia should become a republic.

With Clare O’Neil acting as Speaker of the House, students presented arguments, proposed amendments and experienced parliamentary debate firsthand.

Yesterday, we farewelled the Class of 2026 at their final College Assembly, marking six years of friendships, growth and shared experiences at Mazenod.

A significant moment was the presentation of the Leave to Serve Award to Daniel Paone (MOC1998), recognising his leadership and contributions to business, environmental sustainability and community service. Daniel reflected on his own Mazenod journey, encouraging our graduating students to carry the College's values into their lives beyond school.

The morning also featured reflections from Principal Dr Paul Shannon and College Captain Oliver, a performance by our Year 12 musicians, and the official handover to our 2027 College Leaders.

Following a heartfelt staff blessing, the assembly concluded with our new Legacy Walk, where Year 7 students formed a guard of honour to farewell the graduating cohort beneath the Leave to Serve sign.

To the Class of 2026, thank you for the contribution you have made to Mazenod and the memories you leave behind.

The House Golf Championship was held at Rossdale Golf Course on Monday 12 October, with strong competition across the fairways and greens.

Congratulations to Mayson, who won the Peter Riley Perpetual Trophy with the lowest score of 39, and to Senon, who helped MacKillop claim the House Shield with the lowest average round by House.

Mayson and Kobie also won the Band of Brothers Trophy for the second year in a row.

Well done to all involved ahead of the ACC Junior Golf Championship later this month.

Financial literacy has become one of our most popular Year 9 electives, helping students explore real-world money decisions in a practical and engaging way.

Banqer recently featured Mazenod in a case study on how the program has built consistency across classes, giving teachers a shared framework while still allowing room for discussion, judgement and critical thinking.

Led by Faculty Head of Commerce Nicholas Redfern and the Commerce team, the subject gives students the chance to explore topics such as saving, interest, insurance, renting, mortgages and investment decisions.

With around 220 Year 9 students choosing the elective each year, the program continues to show how strongly students connect with learning that feels relevant beyond school.

Mazenod College is proud to announce our College Leaders for 2027.

Over recent months, our Year 11 students have been challenged to consider what effective leadership looks like and the impact they can have on those around them. A key part of this process has been courage, shown by those willing to step forward, nominate and put themselves forward for leadership.

While leadership roles have been awarded to a select group, leadership at Mazenod extends beyond a badge or title. Every member of the Class of 2027 has the opportunity to influence others through their character, choices and commitment to our College values.

The fourth annual Steven Tynan Blue Ribbon Memorial Cricket Match was played on Wednesday, with Mazenod and Victoria Police sharing the Shield after the fixture ended in a tie for the first time in its history.

The match is held in honour of the late Constable Steven Tynan (MOC1983), recognising his service and the College’s strong connection with Victoria Police and the wider Emergency Services community.

Congratulations to Isath (Year 10), who was named Player of the Match by Victoria Police after an outstanding all-round performance, retiring on 71 and taking three wickets.

Thank you to Victoria Police for another competitive and respectful fixture, and to all staff involved in supporting the day.

Over the school holidays, Ciaran (Year 12) and Xavier (Year 10) had the opportunity to perform in Wallace & Gromit: A Grand Day Out at the Melbourne Recital Centre.

Presented across two sold-out performances, the fully professional production gave both students the chance to perform alongside experienced professional musicians in a high-calibre setting.

They were joined by Mazenod Old Collegian Filip Fulco (MOC2021) on piano, along with Mazenod teachers Mr Chris Lee (MOC2002) and Mr George Melitsis.

A fantastic achievement for Ciaran and Xavier, and a great reflection of the talent and connections within the Mazenod Music community.

The second annual House Badminton Championship delivered a close finish on Tuesday, with strong badminton and plenty of House spirit on display.

Coming off five ACC titles in Term 2, badminton continued its strong year at Mazenod as Houses competed across the day for the overall championship.

Charlebois proved too strong in the end, defeating MacKillop 5-4 in a highly entertaining Grand Final.

A special thank you to Old Collegians Raphael Lydra (MOC2023) and Huey Ng (MOC2024) for organising the teams and match-ups throughout the day. Raphael also presented the Raphael Lydra Medal to Patrick (Year 10), who was named MVP.

Congratulations to Charlebois and well done to everyone involved.

What a day for Mazenod Cross Country.

At Wednesday’s ACC Cross Country Championship, Mazenod claimed the Division 2 Champions Cup after a brilliant team performance across the age groups.

Championship results came in U13, U15, U16, Intermediate, U17, Senior and Senior Overall, with the Junior team also placing 3rd.

Well done to every runner who pulled on the Mazenod singlet and contributed to an outstanding day for the College.

Mazenod’s Performing Arts Festival was held on Tuesday night, bringing together students and staff for an evening of creativity, performance and encouragement.

The program featured a range of creative acts, with performers stepping forward to share their talents with confidence and enthusiasm.

Our student leaders played a strong role throughout the evening, encouraging participation and helping create a supportive environment for everyone willing to give something a go.
