This month in our Montessori Nursery (Picasso Room), our babies are exploring language, food, culture, practical life skills, movement and sensory experiences through a carefully planned program. From learning Auslan signs such as please and thank you, to helping bake a European recipe, watering plants, washing toy vehicles, exploring transportation themes and developing independence through real-life activities.

Dr Maria Montessori observed that the first three years of life are the most important years for brain development. She called this period the “Absorbent Mind” because young children effortlessly take in everything around them.

That is why our educators don’t simply entertain children. They prepare an environment rich in language, movement, order, culture, independence and meaningful experiences.

A baby washing a toy truck, helping mix dough, feeling different textures, hearing new words and signs, or exploring real ingredients is building foundations for future learning.

Dr Montessori observed that young children are naturally drawn to order, repetition, sorting, lining up, transporting, and focused independent activity. These behaviours are not “wrong” or signs that something is lacking socially — they are part of normal development and often a sign of deep concentration.

Not all children thrive in busy, chaotic, high-stimulation environments.
