It's Science Week and our students engaged in an exciting STEM challenge with "Eggie the Astronaut"! In the STEMShed, learners designed and built their own re-entry pods to safely bring Eggie back to Earth. Through hands-on experimentation and iteration, students applied principles of physics, engineering, and design thinking to solve real-world problems. Although one pod didn't survive re-entry, it provided a valuable learning opportunity to refine designs and develop resilience. This activity supports key outcomes in the NSW STEM curriculum by fostering creativity, problem-solving, collaboration, and understanding of forces and materials. Well done students!

Congratulations to all our students on their fantastic performances at the Athletics Carnival held in Mudgee last week! Everyone brought home ribbons, and we are so proud of their achievements, including being named overall Junior Girl Runner Up and Senior Boy Runner Up. Thank you to all our parents for attending and supporting the children. Thanks to all the other staff and students from the other schools whom attended to ensure everyone had a great day. Good luck for Zone!

This success reflects important aspects of the Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) curriculum, where students develop:

Movement skills and physical activity: Enhancing coordination, endurance, and athletic skills through competitive events.
Personal and social capability: Building teamwork, sportsmanship, resilience, and goal-setting.
Health literacy: Understanding the importance of physical activity for health and wellbeing.
Additionally, the event supports cross-curriculum priorities such as Critical and Creative Thinking, as students strategise and set personal goals, and Ethical Understanding, demonstrated through fair play and respect for competitors.

🐾🏫 Term 2 Wrap-Up: Our Small School Debating Competition 🏫🐾

We’re excited to share that our small school debating competition has come to a fantastic close for Term 2! In the final debate for the term, our talented team of —Archer, Ethan, and Imogen—spoke confidently against students from Lue Public School on the thought-provoking topic: "Should students be allowed to bring pets to school?"

The ‘Small Talk’ debating competition is a unique initiative developed within our own small school network, designed to give students a platform to develop critical thinking, public speaking, and teamwork skills in a supportive environment.

This opportunity helps our students build confidence and express their ideas clearly while engaging with important social topics.

🌤️ Exploring ‘Our Weather’ at Hill End Public School! 🌤️

This term our students have been diving deep into the science of weather as part of our ongoing studies. Recently, they created and presented the final round of nine collaborative research projects.

Each project is packed with facts about local weather patterns, types of rainfall, wind directions, and how weather impacts our daily lives. The process encouraged students to research multiple sources, refine their findings, rewrite scientific explanations, and work together to make sure their projects were clear and informative.

These projects are just one part of our broader weather unit, which also includes hands-on STEM projects.

This collaborative research work is a wonderful example of the strengths of small schools like Hill End. Students have the chance to work together, share ideas across year levels, and develop important skills in communication, science and critical thinking. Every student’s contribution is celebrated, and we take pride in offering learning opportunities that are personal, supportive and aim for excellence.

*📽️ Lights, Camera, Action at Hill End Public School! 🎥**

We’re thrilled to share that our students have been hard at work behind the scenes creating an exciting short film for our end of year Presentation day!

From scripting and storyboarding to acting in front of the camera, to learning about editing footage, the children have been learning a range of creative and technical skills.

They’ve learned about teamwork, problem-solving, storytelling, confidence in performance, and the magic of bringing ideas to life on screen. It’s been wonderful to see them so engaged, imaginative, and proud of their work!

This project perfectly embodies our focus of; **Every Child, Every Opportunity**. Every student has had the chance to explore performance and movie-making skills, discovering new talents and building confidence along the way.

We can’t wait to share the final film with our community on Presentation Day. Stay tuned for more updates and the world premiere.

Vale Marianne Kimm ( Nee Stuart) - Mrs Kimm
A week ago our community said a sad farewell to Marianne Kimm.

In that time I know staff and children have felt the loss. In respect to Mrs Kimm, posted below is our farewell from the Hill End school community.

Today it is with deep sadness and a heavy heart that on behalf of the school staff and community I write about the passing of our much-loved dear friend and colleague Marianne (Mrs Kimm).
Mrs Kimm always said she “never left the school”, having been a former student at Hill End Public School and then working for many years as a teacher's aide.

Marianne was a kind, trusted and good-hearted soul who touched the lives of every child and staff member through her work in the classroom. She brought patience and dedication to her work and genuinely loved the children she taught.

Her lasting legacy is the many Hill End students she helped take their first steps in learning. Through her guidance generations of Hill End children learned to read, write and count – skills that will stay with them forever. She not only taught key academic skills but modelled and taught life skills of kindness and respect – expecting children to grow up with pride in themselves, and to become good citizens.

She loved her family dearly and enjoyed bringing her grandchildren into school. She had such pride in her grandchildren, and loved sharing with us their progress at school.
We will all miss Mrs Kimm.

I know that I personally will miss her wicked laugh, I’ll miss those great afternoons and evenings the Hill End community all shared together, and the chance to say “Hi Mrs Kimm” to which she would always reply “G’day Mr G” – then we’d share a laugh together.

Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to Mrs Kimm’s family, friends and all who knew and loved her. She will be greatly missed by the Hill End community.
