Introducing the fastest striking snake in the world - the Death adder!

Native to Australia, they are widely distributed across the mainland, particularly in the northern, eastern and coastal southern regions.

The Death adder is an ambush predator meaning it will sit-and-wait for passing prey. They will lie completely motionless and camouflaged under leaf litter and wiggle its worm-like tail tip (as you can see pictured) to lure prey such as lizards, frogs and small mammals.
Their venom is a potent neurotoxin that is fatal if left untreated, however, death adders are generally shy and rarely strike unless directly stepped on or threatened.

Fun fact: Death adders are viviparous meaning they give birth to live young 🐍

Why does a Black-headed python have a black head?

Native to the dry regions of Northern Australia, these snakes are terrestrial (ground-dwelling) and will burrow for shelter. So when they need to warm up, instead of exposing their entire body to bask in the sun which makes them vulnerable to predators, such as dingoes and birds of prey, they can just poke their head out which acts like a solar panel!

The black colour absorbs sunlight rapidly, allowing the snake to warm it's brain and sensory organs while the rest of it's body is safely hidden 🖤
