Is your child falling behind in school despite trying really hard?

Most curricula are “left brain” in their approach to learning. Information it is presented in sequential manner, auditorily, often in black and white and using multiple repetitions.

“Right brain” dominant students on the other hand learn better when colour, pictures and stories or hands-on activities are added.

If your child is struggling to read or write at their grade level, perhaps they too can benefit from this change in approach.

Does your child sound out the same words again and again?

Do they find sight words are hard to memorize?

Does it seem like the phonics sounds and rules don’t stick?

Do they easily misunderstand verbal information?

Do you notice your child guessing at long words, or giving up half way through sounding out a long word?

Is their reading a year of more below grade level?

If you answered yes to any of the above, perhaps your child would benefit from some timely one-on-one tutoring to help them learn the skills and gain the confidence they need to become a proficient reader.

Quick and effortless identification of letter sounds and word recognition are the two main components of becoming a reader that can then use all of his or her mental energy to understand what is being read. A lack of reading comprehension is a sign your child might need extra help in foundational skills of reading.

Is your child a struggling reader?

Even though there are only 26 letters in our alphabet, a student must be able to recognize over 40 sounds made by these letters.

To read fluently, a student needs to be able to 1. identify the position of a sound in a word, 2. blend individual sounds into words, 3. break the word into its individual sounds, and 4. add, subtract, delete or substitute individual sounds in words. This is called Phonemic Awareness. Without it anyone will struggle to read well.

Using a combination of gentle brain integration exercises, phonemic awareness games and phonic reading exercises I work with students to help them make leaps in their learning and discover that they too can read well and enjoy it!

Students of all ages find aspects of English
– writing, reading, spelling – challenging.

Often the way we are wired to learn is different from how we are being taught. The truth is, there are multiple different learning styles. One way is not better or worse. What may work for one student, may make no sense to another.

When students are supported in discovering their preferred learning style - and are offered the grace and patience to grow the way they are uniquely wired - then confidence has a chance to take root and learning will happen.

What if regular one-on-one tutoring could help your student discover their optimum learning style?
